Supplementary Mail fee levied after the closure of the mails from Sydney to Melbourne. Endorsed “Per “Great Britain” via Melbourne” at upper left and superb strikes of the transit datestamps, side flaps missing and ironed vertical filing fold, otherwise fine and most appealing - and a most unusual usage of two differing shades of the 6 d. value on the same cover. Route - Private steamship: Departed Sydney 16 May 1857 per “Governor General” to Melbourne. Victorian contract steamship: Departed Melbourne (21 May) per “Great Britain”, via Cape Horn to Liverpool (22 Aug); by rail to Edinburgh, arriving 24 Aug 1857 (100 days). Note: There must have been some urgency for this letter as the envelope was initially endorsed for the European and Australian Royal Mail Co. steamer “Simla” but was crossed out and allocated in the supplementary mail for an additional 6 d. to catch the S.S. “Great Britain”, which left on the 21 May, as opposed to the “Simla” which left on the 30 May.
