Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
3439 cover imageVia Pacific Ocean 1863 (May 18): Cover from Sydney, New South Wales to San Francisco, USA bearing 1862 New South Wales 1 s. carmine, a single example just crossed by vertical filing fold, neatly cancelled by Sydney duplex, prepaying 1 s. for a 1 ounce ship letter to the United States. “SHIP” handstamp applied at San Francisco to recognise an incoming ship letter and “8” (cents) handstamp in black for the double incoming ship letter fee to be paid by on receipt. The double incoming ship letter fee of 8 cents was only applicable for twelve months from 1 July 1863 to 30 June 1864. A very attractive and unusual double rate cover. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Sydney 18 May 1863 per clipper “All Serene” to San Francisco, arriving 1 Aug 1863 (75 days). Note: This was one of the last voyages of the “All Serene”. In January 1864 she capsized 50 miles south of Tonga with the loss of 23 lives. Provenance: Collection Palmer. (Image 1) (Image 2)

3441 cover imageVia Tasman Sea & Pacific Ocean 1870 (April 25): Cover front from Sydney, New South Wales to “Fles Loyalty” (Islands), New Caledonia bearing 1868 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. violet, a single example cancelled by the Sydney duplex and prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New Caledonia. Endorsed “P. Paid by the Marceau” at the lower left. Fine and rare, one of the earliest recorded covers from the Australian Colonies to New Caledonia. Route - Private steamship: Departed Sydney 25 April 1870 per “Marceau” to Port de France, New Caledonia. Note: The Loyalty Islands are a small group of islands about 100km. north from New Caledonia. The “Marceau” was a small French naval gunboat with 4 guns which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean to protect French interests in the region, primarily New Caledonia and New Hebrides. Provenance: Collection Forster, Eastgate. (Image 1) (Image 2)

3442 imageVia Tasman Sea & Pacific Ocean 1870c.: Cover front from Newcastle, New South Wales to Port de France, New Caledonia bearirng 1868 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. purple, two examples, cancelled by the rays numeral “55” of Newcastle and prepaying 1 s. for a double rate 1 ounce ship letter to New Caledonia. Endorsed “Per first vessel from Sydney” at top, indicating how infrequent mail was to the Pacific Islands from the Australian Colonies. The owner believes that this cover may be a couple of years earlier than the previous lot, based on the shade of the 6 d. adhesives. One of the earliest recorded covers from the Australian Colonies to New Caledonia. Provenance: Collection Forster, Eastgate. (Image 1) (Image 2)
