Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
3151 cover imageOverland via Marseilles 1864 (Oct 22): Cover from Hunters Hill, New South Wales to Locarno, Switzerland bearing 1862 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. reddish-purple, perf. 13, small tear at top, cancelled by rays numeral “221” of Hunters Hill (rated RRR in “The Numeral Cancellations of New South Wales” by Freeman), prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 1 s. 4 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 10 d. to Switzerland. “90” (rappen) manuscript in red for internal postage to be paid by the recipient. Unusually, mail from New South Wales to Switzerland is very scarce, with the Swiss immigrants following the Victorian gold rushes and not venturing north over the border. A small portion of the backflap is missing and minor soiling confined to reverse, otherwise fine and a very scarce destination for New South Wales. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 22 Oct 1864 per “Bombay” to Galle (15 Nov); “Simla” (17 Nov) to Suez (3 Dec); overland to Alexandria; “Euxine” (5 Dec) via Malta (8 Dec) to Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles (11 Dec) to Locarno, arriving 16 Dec 1864 (55 days). Note: The temporary rates increase appears to have only applied to mail to Great Britain. This envelope was addressed to Switzerland, and routed via Marseilles which avoided the British mail system and the potential postage due. However, it was still grossly underpaid, and not identified by the postal officials of either New South Wales or Switzerland. Provenance: Collection Davis, 'Alvarado'. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Fine, and a rare Riverina cover showing four different stamp issues. Note: The writer appears to have prepaid the 10 d. ship letter rate via Marseille with both the New South Wales and Victorian adhesives to make sure the envelope was placed in the mails for the quicker service. Just three "Riverina" combination covers are recorded with four colour frankings. Route: Overland from Albury 26 Dec 1867 to Melbourne (28 Dec). Pre-paid to Alexandria (with British PO cds 2 August in black) and treated as unpaid to Italy via Brindisi. “20” (decimi) manuscript in black representing the postal charges from Egypt to Italy to be paid by the recipient. Note: The envelope is prepaid 1 s. 8 d. for the 1⁄2 ounce ship letter rate to Italy via Marseilles. Although endorsed “Via Brindisi” at the upper left, this was not an official route available from the Australian Colonies, and therefore could not be pre-paid to destination. Framed “INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED” handstamp in black applied at Sydney recognising the underpayment. Printed Matter rate to London via Marseilles and underpaid 1 d. for the redirected 7 d. rate via Brindisi. Struck with the extremely rare “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / 1d.” handstamp in black applied in London and “2” (pence) manuscript in blue representing the amended deficiency of 2 d. for a double rate item. Fine strike of the “INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / FOR BRINDISI ROUTE / DEFICIENT POSTAGE / d3” handstamp in black applied in London. Cover slightly fore-shortened at left and minor stain spots, otherwise fine and most attractive. Note: Given this envelope was a double rate letter, the fine should have been 6 d., not 3 d. Nine covers recorded from New South Wales with this Deficient Postage handstamp, this being the sole example of a double rate cover. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse and with Aalesund arrival on obverse. Lower flap missing on the reverse and the cover with minor imperfections but an enormously scarce destination with Norway being by far the rarest destination of the Nordic countries, this cover being one of the earliest covers recorded from the Australian Colonies to Norway. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 6 July 1878 per “Avoca” to Melbourne; “Assam” (9 July) to Galle (28 July); “Tehran” (31 July) via Suez Canal (17 Aug) to Alexandria; “Pera” (20 Aug) to Brindisi; by rail from Brindisi (24 Aug) to London (27 Aug); by steamer via Oslo to Aalesund, arriving 11 Sept 1878 (67 days). Note: A full transcript of the letter is included with this lot. Meranburn is a small farming community about 50km. west of Orange. The writer, Ole Svendsen, has bought a small farm but has not heard from his family in Norway for two years. He writes: “I have had some bad luck since I got here, losing one of my best horses. In the last 3 years we had no rain and until now we had some but so little that nothing grows and half of the stock is dead since no water was available to drink. There is winter here at the moment. We have Christmas in the middle of summer and it is so hot that we hardly get out of the house.” (Image 1) (Image 2)
