3054 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1860 (June 14): Mourning cover from Moama, New South Wales to London endorsed “Via Melbourne”, bearing New South Wales 1859 Diadem 6 d. fawn "error: Watermark 8”, a three margin example cancelled by indistinct barred numeral “137” of Moama and Victoria 1858 6 d. light blue, both cancelled and tied by the London arrival datestamp in red. A fine combination cover, prepaying the New South Wales 6 d. inland postage from Moama to Melbourne and Victorian 6 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to England. Most of the early "Riverina" covers are addressed to Miss Lewes, including this example. A very fine and early Riverina combination cover. Note: Towns near the Murray River in south west New South Wales could route overseas mail via Melbourne, Victoria to catch an earlier ship than would have been possible had they been routed via Sydney. Such mail required prepayment from New South Wales for the inter-colonial postage to Melbourne and overseas postage from Victoria to destination. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 14 June 1860 per “Malta” via Galle (9 July) to Suez (27 July); overland to Alexandria; “Massilia” (28 July) via Malta (31 July) to Southampton (9 Aug); by rail to London arriving 10 August 1860 (57 days). Provenance: Collection Burrus, Amundsen, Perry. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

The letter was transferred to the Royal Danish Post in Hamburg for transmission to Wandsbeck in the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein, then part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The recipient had to pay the additional 4 skillings for local postage. Ex Provenance: Collections Molnar, Lorentzen, Palmer. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

3066 cover imageVia Southampton 1864 (Oct 22): Cover from Newtown, New South Wales to Aberdeen, Scotland bearing 1863 New South Wales 2 d. pale blue, a horizontal pair lightly cancelled in black and prepaying the greatly reduced rate of just 4 d. by the long sea route. The embossed "Via Southampton" printed motif deleted and framed "TOO LATE" applied in black after the closure of the Southampton mails and the cover thus carried on the "Maid of Judah" clipper. "SHIP LETTER / LONDON" cds in red (Jan 30, 1865) on obverse and arrival on reverse. A rare cover - believed to be the sole example of the short-lived Rate Decrease. Route: White Star Line: Departed Sydney 22 Oct 1864 per Clipper "Maid of Judah" to London (30 Jan 1865), by rail to Aberdeen, arriving 31 Jan 1865 (52 days). Note: NSW Rate Decrease: With the Australian packet service running at a loss, the NSW Government increased the rates via Southampton to 1 s and via Marseilles to 1 s. 4 d. on 1 July 1864 to 14 Nov 1864 for a ½ ounce letter. As an incentive, the Government reduced rates for mail carried by the non-packet ship letters or 'long sea route' to just 4 d. for a ½ ounce letter. The higher rates applied for just four P&O sailings on 22nd of July, August, September and October 1864. This cover is believed to be the sole surviving example of a rate decrease 'long sea route' cover as the 'incentive' was abandoned in November 1864. Provenance: Collection Druce, Forster. After this date, the old rate of 10 d. was again resumed. Letters would have been charged at the higher rates for only four P&O sailings from Sydney from the July to October monthly voyages. During the four month period of the temporary rate increase, mail sent via Southampton during this time was readily available. Thus mail sent via Marseilles during this period is rare, with only a few examples recorded. Provenance: Collection Davis, Forster, Palmer. (Image 1) (Image 2)
