3021 cover imageOverland via Southampton 1856 (Jan 23): Registered cover from Bombala, New South Wales to Wymondham, England bearing 1855 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. grey, margins close to huge, tied by “40” barred numeral obliterator of Bombala and also tied by “REGISTERED / BOMBALA” handstamp in black, prepaying the 6 d. Registration Fee only, whilst the ½ ounce ship letter rate remained unpaid. Handstruck “d6” applied in black to be paid by the recipient. A delightful cover in outstanding quality. Note: From the 1 January 1857 postage had to be compulsorily prepaid and the sender of this letter on the 27 December 1856 took advantage of this position four days before enactment. Thus, the 6 d. adhesive prepaid the 6 d. registration fee, not the ship letter rate. With the letter arriving in England unpaid, the debit of 6 d. (d6) to the British Post Office was required to account for the shortfall. Route - The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Sydney 23 Jan 1857 per “Oneida” via Melbourne (15 Feb) and King Georges Sound (22 Feb). The ship broke down 400 miles west of Cape Leuwin, Western Australia and returned to King Georges Sound and was unable to continue. The Mails were transferred. Departed King Georges Sound (21 March) per “European” via Galle (4 April) to Suez; overland to Alexandria; “Etna” (25 April) via Malta (29 April) to Southampton (8 May); by rail via London to Wymondham, arriving 10 May 1857 (114 days). Note: This was the first homeward voyage of the European and Australian Royal Mail Co. to England and was a complete financial disaster. The Company lost the entire subsidy for this voyage and did not have a ship available for the May mail from Australia. Incidents such as this plagued the Company throughout their contract, ending with insolvency in 1858. Provenance: Collection 'Alvarado'. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
