755 cover image1850 (Jan 1): Sydney Views - the two earliest covers recorded in the Ben Palmer census going abroad - 1 d. red, Plate 1, with close margins and vertical crease used with 2 d. greyish blue, Plate 1 with huge margins all round, used on 16th January 1850 entire letter from Mossman's Bay, Sydney to Ayr, Scotland each tied by barred oval Sydney obliterator in black with oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / SYDNEY" despatch datestamp (Jan 18) in red. Carried from Sydney on the Clipper ship "Phoenician" which departed from Sydney on Jan 19th and charged "8" pence in manuscript to pay for an incoming ship letter in manuscript, with London cds (April 23) in red and Ayr arrival cds (April 24) on reverse. The cover with splendid easily readable content "I arrived in Sydney with 160 head of cattle, the butchers offered me so little for them that I only sold 30 or so and boiled the remainder. The tallow manufactured at manufactured at Hamilton's boiling establishment has been shipped on board the St. George and consigned to London...I called on Capt. Erskine and the Governor last friday....there have been many destructive fires round the town....26 families have been burned ourt of their houses and £2500 worth of property destroyed...there are many drawbacks to a bush life on the Lachlan...Sydney is taking ship for California, vessels are sailing every day laden with goods and passengers for San Francisco, as yet very little gold has been sent back...we will suffer from the effects (of emgration)...before California drained our population I was strongly opposed to the importation of convicts..". An important entire - the earliest known usage of the 1 d. and 2 d. used to pay the outgoing ship fee of 3 d. listed in Palmer's census and the second earliest stamped cover from an Australian State to an overseas address with the adhesives used in the third week of issue. Provenance: Rod Perry (1976); Spink 'Rarities' sale, 8 May 1997, lot 1085. 1850 (Jan 1): Sydney View 3 d. yellowish green on yellowish laid paper, close to good margins and showing the "No Whip" variety, used on 1850 mourning envelope to Stowe, England tied by barred oval Sydney obliterator in black with oval "PAID SHIP LETTER / ♚ / SYDNEY" despatch datestamp (Jan 24) in red at left, endorsed "p. Agricola" which sailed at noon on Jan 25th arriving in London (May 29) with red cds on reverse, top flap maissing, and Weedon arrival cds in blue alongside, again charged "8" pence for an incoming ship letter - this is the second earliest usage of a 3 d. Sydney View on an outgoing letter. Cert. Holcombe (1995). An outstanding pairing and of consummate importance to the development of adhesive postage stamps in the Colony of New South Wales.
