6217 cover imageNew Republic & Transvaal 1888 (Aug 18): Registered envelope to Bordeaux bearing New Republic 2 d. (4 Jan 87) on blue granite paper without embossed Arms, in combination with Transvaal 1883 re-issue 1 d. (3), 1885 6 d. blue, 1885 'HALF PENNY' on 1 s. green and 1887 '2d' on 3 d. mauve overprint type 24 (2, one damaged), all tied by oval VRYHEID datestamp in violet with year error '87', red manuscript registration number, LONDON and Calais à Paris TPO datestamps on front, reverse with DUNDEE and DURBAN transit as well as arrival datestamps. The envelope with large part cut away from reverse, nevertheless a scarce and fascinating usage. Note: This letter was posted less than a month after the New Republic became part of Transvaal. Transvaal postage stamps were already available in Vryheid. The postage rate to France from Transvaal was 9½ d. via the Cape Colony and 7½ d. via Natal, the registration fee was 4 d. The 2 d. New Republic internal charge should no longer have applied, but was nevertheless paid by the sender. From the transit marks this letter followed the more convenient and chaeper route through Natal and is thus 4 d. overpaid. Provenance: Robert Siegel, New York, September 2000, lot 2274A.
