3361 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1867 (March 21): Registered cover from Durban, Natal to Melbourne, Victoria bearing 1863 Natal 6 d. lilac, a single example and a pair neatly cancelled by barred numeral “2” and prepaying 1 s. 6 d. comprising 1 s. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria plus 6 d. registration. Endorsed “Via Mauritius” at upper left and with very fine circular “REGISTERED / ♚ / NATAL” handstamp in black (the earliest of seven examples recorded) and fine arrival datestamp for Melbourne in blue. Very fine, and a rare origin / destination cover for Natal. Route - Contract steamship: Departed Durban 21 March 1867 via Mauritius to Galle. P&O Line: Departed Galle (20 April) per “Geelong” via King Georges Sound (5 May) to Melbourne, arriving 11 May 1867 (51 days).
