1376 image1859 (Dec): Dardenne 2 d. pale blue on horizontally laid paper, a horizontal pair with ample to very large margins on two sides (Row 5, stamps 1 and 2, positions 25-26 on the sheet of 72 subjects) with marginal mark below "P" of PENCE on left stamp and large "ink clog" behind the neck and a Retouch on the hair of the Queen on position 26, which also shows marginal marks in the top left corner; lightly cancelled by void obliterator handstamps in black. Ironed corner crease at lower right but a most attractive pair, Arnold Rudge records just four horizontal pairs from this position: three are housed in this collection. Cert. BPA (1995) Gi = £ 2'200. Note: Rudge #49. Rudge originally positioned the "ink clogs" / "hickies" on the right of the sheet, this pair proves conclusively that they could occur on the left side also. The pair thinned at left, is attached to an entire to which it very obviously does not belong - the cover being dated some months prior to the issue of the Dardenne; however the pair itself is important for the Stone Line - just five pairs exist from this position, one of which is in the Mosely collection in the British Library.
