Walters”. On arrival at Hobart, superb framed "Ship Letter Inwards Free" handstamp was applied twice on the front, with a similar diamond datestamp (Oct 31) for delivery at Launceston on the reverse. No charges raised as the consignees letter meant that goods were being shipped by the writer. Very fine and a scarce entire from Mauritius to Tasmania. Route - Private sailing ship: Departed Port Louis 19 Sept 1857 per “Cantero” to Hobart (321 Oct); overland to Launceston, arriving 31 Oct 1857 (59 days). Note: The commercial contents of the letter relate to the trade of sugar from Mauritius to Tasmania with an offer of half the consignee's cargo. Endorsed “Per Mail Packet” at upper left and with fine Mauritius despatch and Melbourne arrival datestamp in red. A very fine and most appealing entire. Signed A. Diena. Cert. BPA (1993), Brandon (2007). Route - P&O Line: Departed Port Louis 18 Nov 1859 per “Columbian” via King Georges Sound (5 Dec) and Adelaide (10 Dec) to Melbourne, arriving 13.12.1859 (31 days). Note: Three Post Paid Mauritius covers are recorded to the Australian Colonies of which this is by far the finest. The addressee was the small colonial merchant Miller Brothers & Co. with offices in Queens Street, Melbourne. They owned the small schooner “Grecian Queen” which traded between Mauritius and Victoria, with occasional voyages to India. The contents of the entire refer to the “depressed state of trade in your market, unfortunately we have no better accounts to forward from this side and we can easily foresee from the limitation of credit and tightness of the money market that the (sugar) Planters will have a severe struggle to go through their Entrecoupe.” Provenance: Collection Lagerloef, Wren, Chand. The letter was later sent by the “Iserbrook”. At left is the scarce “MISSENT / TO ADELAIDE S.A.” handstamp in black, thence forwarded to Tasmania. Scarce and attractive, illustrating the inconsistency of sailing ship transportation to the Australian Colonies.
