1349 (*) image1859 (Dec): Dardenne 1 d. red (shades) on horizontally laid paper, the reconstruction of the sheet, as far as can be assumed at the present time, although both the 1 d. and 2 d. Dardenne sheets were probably the same size (6 x 12), so far, due to the paucity of multiples and material per se with the rare 1 d. value, 42 different stamps have been found with plate-able flaws (these have been given 'type' numbers shared between specialists) although the positions on the sheet are yet to be fully identified. Part reconstruction totalling 28 positions including two horizontal and one vertical pair; Reconstructed block of four stamps comprising vertical pair ex Kanai and one single and scanned-image of the fourth stamp (from Vickery Collection); together with 10 singles examples including one unused (Type 59), illustrating mainly the constant flaws that characterise the types, including one late 1861 usage. An exceptional group and this describer hopes that the owner's remarkable work can be successfully continued Gi = £ 75'000+. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Left hand stamp (Type 2) with grave accent over first "N" of PENNY and dash of colour below second "N" in margin; right hand stamp showing two vertical lines of colour above NW corner. A rare and most attractive multiple Gi = £ 6'000. Note: Types 2 and 38 on the still incomplete plating study. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1351 image1859 (Dec): Dardenne 1 d. red on horizontally laid paper, a used example with large margins all round, cancelled by void obliterator in black leaving the Queen's head largely clear, showing dot in front of the Queen's mouth and adjacent to horizontal dash in the Grecian border. A very fine example of this scarce stamp. Signed A. Diena, W. Engel Gi = £ 2'250. Note: Type 15 in the still incomplete plating study. The owner has noted that Type 15 would probably be adjacent to right of Type 24 on the plate. See attached copy of the album page with the lot. (Image 1) (Image 2)

1352 image1859 (Dec): Dardenne 1 d. red on horizontally laid paper, a used vertical pair, with large margins all round, showing part of the Paper Maker's watermark; lightly cancelled by the void obliterator in black, small repair in margin at top right of no significance as vertical pairs, as aids to plating, are of consummate importance, lower stamp with "white spot flaw" over first "N" of PENNY showing clearly, a most attractive and extremely rare multiple. Note: Types 24/1 on the still incomplete plating study. Provenance: Collection Hiroyuki Kanai RDP., DF, Zurich, 3 Nov 1993, lot 229. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

1354 cover image1859: Dardenne 1 d. red, a used example with enormous margins all round with Britannia 1859/61 1 d. vermilion, ample to good margins, used on 1860 cover endorsed "via Southampton" to Montreal, Canada, tied by strikes of the void obliterator in black. Reverse with "Mauritius" despatch cds (Jan 9), in black, "London / Paid" transit cds (Feb 9) in red on obverse and reverse with Montreal cdds (Feb 25) and la Chute arrival cds in red (Feb 28). "11d." credit marking in red crayon and "1" credit to Mauritius in manuscript red ink. The 1 s. adhesive lifted and replaced, a remarkable combination usage with the 1 d. Dardenne issue. Certs. BPA (1998), RPSL (1998). Note: Just 12 genuine covers are known bearing the Dardenne 1 d., five covers with multiple usages on 4 d. rate covers to France; 3 covers with Printed Matter rate usages, 1 Soldier's rate cover and two local covers for the town rate of 1 d. It should be stated here that the Kanai cover (lot 272) bearing the 1 d. and 2 d. values is a forgery. This Transatlantic usage is entirely unique. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4)

1356 * image1859 (Dec): Dardenne 1 d. vermilion on horizontally laid paper, an unused example with close margins on three sides and imperceptibly touched at lower right, huge margin at left, in a vivid bright shade, showing the "Cut Transfer" variety clearly with large portion of lower left corner diagonally shaved and part of the stamp has been excised prior to printing, presumably by a knife cut (see Rudge "The Mauritius Primitives" page 89 and figure 59 on page 99), thin spot at top right and some slight black ink spots at base, crackly slightly brownish gum on reverse. A wonderful stamp, just two examples with the Cut Transfer known in unused condition. Cert. BPA (1938) Gi = £ 10'000+. Note: Rudge #28 in his listing of all 48 unused examples known, nearly all of which have faults of one sort or another, at least 19 are housed in the collection of King Charles III (7) or in museum collections (12), from memory, this describer also remembers another example in the Vickery collection at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. Note: Type 9 on the still incomplete plating study. The only other unused example was in the Arthur Hind collection, Harmers, London, 12 June 1934, lot 384. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Reverse with circular "G.P.O. / MAURITIUS" circular datestamp (Dec 9) in black. Circular "Pays Etr. V. Suez / Amb. D" in red (Jan 5, 1860) with 'Paris a Bordeaux' cds (Jan 6) and Lormont arrival (Jan 7) cds on reverse, and charged "8" décimes to pay. A fine and rare vertical pair. Cert. Behr (2005). Note: Rudge pair #123. The Behr certificate states that it is impossible to certify whether the stamps belong top the letter. However, whilst the Stanley Gibbons catalogue lists the Dardenne issue as released on 12 December 1859, this is one of five known stamped covers all with postal markings consistent with the 9 December 1859 monthly P&O sailing. In this describer's opinion the stamps were issued to coincide with this sailing, as indeed were the De La Rue issue adhesives on 7 April 1860.
