3369 cover imageIncoming Mail via the Indian Ocean 1887 (Sept 11): Cover from Yokohama, Japan to Brown’s River, Tasmania bearing 1876 Japan 10 s. blue indistinctly cancelled and prepaying 10 sen for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Tasmania. Endorsed “Per first steamer” at left and with Yokohama despatch. The reverse with Hong Kong transit and arrival datestamps in Tasmania. Some minor peripheral cover imperfections, otherwise fine and a rarity to the Australian Colonies. Route - P&O Line: Departed Yokohama 11 Sept 1887 per “Tibet” via Kobe (12 Sept), Nagasaki (13 Sept) to Hong Kong (14 Sept). Departed Hong Kong (23 Sept) per “Brindisi” via Singapore (28 Sept) and Penang (1 Oct) to Colombo. Departed Colombo (5 Oct) per “Thames” via King Georges Sound (17 Oct) to Adelaide (20 Oct); by rail to Melbourne. Departed Melbourne to Launceston (24 Oct); overland via Hobart (25 Oct) to Brown’s River, arriving 25 Oct 1887 (50 days). Note: The earliest cover recorded from Japan to the Australian Colonies. By comparison, Australian Colonial covers addressed to Japan in the pre-UPU period are exceptionally rare. There is only one from Victoria and a small correspondence of about four covers from New South Wales mailed in the late 1880’s. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
