Incoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1857 (22 Dec): Cover from Jamaica to Buninyong, Victoria with indistinct datestamp on reverse and “JAMAICA / PAID” datestamp (Dec 30) at the top left and endorsed “Paid 10d” at top with the value scored through and re-rated with manuscript “1/-” in dull red representing prepayment for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. On the reverse are transit datestamps for London, Melbourne, and the gold diggings at Buninyong. Fine and a great rarity to the Australian Colonies. The earliest cover recorded from Jamaica to Victoria. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Kingston 11 Jan 1859 per “Derwent” to St. Thomas (15 Jan); “Atrato” (17 Jan) to Southampton (18 Feb); by rail via London (21 Jan) to Southampton. The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Southampton (12 Feb) per “Teviot” via Malta (23 Feb) to Alexandria (26 Feb); overland to Suez; “Columbian” (27 Feb) via Galle (23 March) and King Georges Sound (17 April) to Melbourne (25 April), overland to Buninyong, arriving 29 April 1859 (120 days). Incoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1871 (March 10): Cover from Chapelton, Jamaica to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1860 1 s. dull brown, wmk. pineapple, 1870 2 d. rose, wmk. CC and 3 d. green cancelled “A33” obliterator with Kingston datestamp (March 9) on the reverse, prepaying 1 s. 5 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales. Some peripheral cover soiling, and missing top flap on reverse, nevertheless fine and very rare. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Kingston 10 March 1871 per “Seine” via Jacmel (13 March) and St. Thomas (15 March) to Plymouth (2 April); by rail via London (3 April) to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (15 April) per “Candia” via Malta (25 April) to Alexandria (28 April); overland to Suez; “Hindostan” (1 May) to Galle (14 May); “Rangoon” (16 May) via King Georges Sound (31 May) and Melbourne (6 June) to Sydney, arriving 8 June 1871 (91 days). Note: The cover is addressed to “H.M. Ship Basilisk”, a British warship in the Australia Squadron. It undertook survey operations around Eastern New Guinea, under the command of Captain John Moresby, the founder of Port Moresby, the capital of Papua. Some minor aging to perforations but a rare cover: addressed to Benjamin Smith Lyman (1835-1920) was an American foreign advisor to the Japanese Government from 1873-1879 as both a geologist to carry out surveys for coal deposits on Hokkaido, successfully discovering large coal seams for the nascent industry.
