On the reverse are transit datestamps for London, Melbourne, and the gold diggings at Buninyong. Fine and a great rarity to the Australian Colonies. The earliest cover recorded from Jamaica to Victoria. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Kingston 11 Jan 1859 per “Derwent” to St. Thomas (15 Jan); “Atrato” (17 Jan) to Southampton (18 Feb); by rail via London (21 Jan) to Southampton. Some peripheral cover soiling, and missing top flap on reverse, nevertheless fine and very rare. Route - Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Departed Kingston 10 March 1871 per “Seine” via Jacmel (13 March) and St. Thomas (15 March) to Plymouth (2 April); by rail via London (3 April) to Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (15 April) per “Candia” via Malta (25 April) to Alexandria (28 April); overland to Suez; “Hindostan” (1 May) to Galle (14 May); “Rangoon” (16 May) via King Georges Sound (31 May) and Melbourne (6 June) to Sydney, arriving 8 June 1871 (91 days). Note: The cover is addressed to “H.M. Ship Basilisk”, a British warship in the Australia Squadron.
