1725 cover imageSabelli and Pond Attempted Nonstop Flight New York - Rome 1934 (May 15 / June 11): Two covers including 'Sabelli' signed 12c. stationery from "Brooklyn Jan. 5" duplex and a second strike of "May 13", 'Floyd Bennett Field May 14' handstam in blue, flown to "Leact Concubair 15.V.34"(Ireland) and "ROMA AEROPORTE LITTORIO 11.6.34" arrival cds. on front. In addition an Italian airmail envelope of the return flight,also signed by Sabelli, franked with L2.50 cancelled "POSTA AEREA ROMA FERROVIA 17.8.34.24" back to USA, concelled after recovery at "NEWPORT PEMBROKESHIRE 19 AU 34". Envelope litte toned, otherwise fine. Cesare Sabelli and Capt. George R. Pond attempted a non-stop flight from New York to Rome in the Bellanca CH-300 Peacemaker NR-13137 “Leonardo da Vinci”. They started from Floyd Bennett Field only on May 15th, few months delayed because of bad weather. They were forced down at Leact Ui Concubair, Ireland, due to engine trouble. After repairs they reached Rome on June 11th. On their way back, they took off from Littorio Airport, Rome in the morning bound for Dublin, beginning the return flight to New York and Terra Nova. Having encountered adverse weather with fog, rain and wind during the crossing of the Irish Sea, the pilots decided to reverse course and return to Wales. While looking for a suitable landing site, at 03.15 on the morning of 19 August, the plane struck the Carne Ingli mountain, two miles from the Pembrokeshire coast. The monoplane overturned and was destroyed while the pilots were fortunately unhurt. The mail was recovered and delivered at the closest post office. Nierinck 34019, Longhi 3112 +3143= € 2'700. 2279 cover image1940/45: WW II Occupation of Yougoslavia, lot 19 covers, including Italian Occupation of Albania with 1940 censored airmail usage from "VLONE 16.10.40", Istria, Rodi Egeo with 1944 (July 16) 'Pro sinistrati di guerra' first day usage on 30. c. stationery card (Sass. = €550) and German 'Inselpost', further cover usages from Montenegro (2), Lubiana (10.VIII.44), German usages Adria-Alpenvorland, Zona Occupato Kupa (2), German Occupation Kotor (230.IX.44 as well as 1943 (6.X) cover from Spalato, Croatia. Some stains noted, but generally fine and rare items. Plus two stamps INSELPOST for Rhodos, one unused, with hinge removed (Mi. Obverse with very fine “Hotel Menaggio” datestamp in purple and transit datestamps for “Natante-Colico Como”, Brindisi and Sydney arrival on the reverse. A fine and attractive franking from the Darley correspondence. Route: Departed Menaggio, Italy 29 May 1884 by rail to Brindisi (31 May). P&O Line: Departed Brindisi (2 June) per “Surat” to Alexandria (5 June); “Bokhara” (6 June) via Aden (10 June) to Colombo (18 June); “Sutlej” (18 June) via King Georges Sound (30 June) and Adelaide (4 July) to Melbourne (6 July); by rail to Sydney, arriving 8 July 1884 (40 days).
