7031 cover imagePre-philatelic decorative envelope 1843ca (Nov 3): Decorative envelope, written in Chotzen / Choceň and despatched at the post office in neighbouring Hohenmauth / Vysoké Mýto, directed to Catherine de Pohl in the Prince Kinsky - Palais in Prague. Struck with italics Hohenmauth handstamp in blue (Müller 530a = 80 points) and additional “3 11” datestamp in the same shade, reverse with indistinct arrival datestamp. Charged with ‘6’ (kreuzer) for a letter up to 20 Austrian miles. A most attractive decorative cover / Zierbrief with a religious iconography which was typical for the Biedermeier period. Despite some corner wear, an exceptional piece of the greatest rarity, not only in Bohemia, but also in European pre-philately with its high-quality four-colour lithographic print. Note: A handwritten note on reverse gives Wilhelmina Maria Elisabeth Johanna Baptista Gräfin von Colloredo-Mansfeld (1804-1871), the widow of Fürst Rudolf Josef Anton Ferdinand Franz Leonhard Wilhelm Guido Kinsky von Vchinitz-Tettau (1802-1836) as sender. The Hohenmauth handstamp in blue is known since 1837, but the 6 kreuzer due speaks for a use after the rate change in 1843. The lithographic print is of excellent quality, the clarity and brightness of the print correspond well with the careful continuity without overlaps in all four colours. It is likely that the print was made for the exclusive use of the noble customer by a good but unknown printer in a small number of copies, of which only this one has apparently survived. It appears to be the only colour-decorated letter from the pre-stamp period. Its exceptionality certainly lies in the religious theme, its graphic expression and the corresponding choice of colors. Provenance: Dorotheum sale (6 May 2015), lot 280. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
