4109 cover image1885/91: Group of 10 covers all cancelled by the London Hoster Machine cancel, including Types VI, VII and VIII (Dubus 35-38). Noted a large size mail envelope (144 x 187mm.) with Christmas Card enclosed sent 24 December 1885 and one cover to Norway. There are four examples of the Hoster Service marking in red used on the reverse as an arrival mark Type I & II, one of which is the earliest known use of the cancel. 4112 cover image1879: 1 d. brown, postal stationery card, used London to Zierikzee, Holland, dated 30 January 1891, cancelled by the rare and distinctive London EC 'Malin' Experimental Machine cancellation in black, with arrival cds also in black alongside. Faint corner crease lower left and minor damage along that side, otherwise fine (H&B CP10). An excellent example of this rarely seen postmark, which was used intermittently during a six month period in 1890-91. One of four known examples. Note: Little has been discovered in the British Postal Archives regarding the 'Malin' machine trial, or the machine itself, other than the machine was rejected since it could only postmark a maximum of 100 items of mail in a minute. The machine appears to have been used only for postmarking out-bound mail to foreign destinations(Image 1) (Image 2)

4113 cover image1889: ½ d. brown, newspaper wrapper, used example, London to Brightholme, dated 29 August 1893, cancelled by the rare London International Trial Machine cancel in black. 4115 (*) image1897: Two Proof impressions of the Imperial Victoria Jubilee Flag "1837 / VICTORIA / 1897" in violet ink on GPO un-watermarked file paper. Taken during the Post Office evaluation of the machine provided by the 'Imperial Mail Marking Machine Company of Canada'. 4118 cover image1897/1900: Study of the Bickerdike Trial Machine cancel in black, presented upon twenty pages, comprising thirty-eight covers/cards (38) and three pieces (3). Half the pages are focused upon the ? V?R ? and the others on the E ? R examples, of which four covers have the Victoria instead of the Edward Crown between ER. Included is a page with two pieces franked with 1881 1 d. lilac tied by the 1897 First Trial ? V?R ? cancel one with serifs and one without serifs to VR. The other pages are primarily given over to examples of the London experimental with a page dedicated to the Liverpool Trial which contains two examples from Machine 1, one a 1900 UPU 1 d. postal card sent to Hamburg. Of those from London there is at least two example of each of the six Machine numbers. Various frankings and destinations inland and overseas. Condition varys although several better. 4119 cover image1889: ½ d. brown, postal stationery card, used example, sent locally within London, dated 31 August 1898, cancelled by the scarce London Boston Experimental Machine cancel in black, from the first Trial. Has been pinned through the stamp and as a result has two tiny holes and a small scuff, which are not obvious and do not detract. Otherwise, a fine example of this postmark. Additionally, comes with a study of the Boston Machine cancels comprising eleven pages with detailed write-up. Four are dedicated to the second Trial of 1899-1900 and six covering the Edwardian period of the second Trial and later usage. Included in the assembly is a piece franked with an 1881 1 d. lilac tied by the First Trial Boston Experimental cancel dated 10 September 1898. Three pages have seven examples on cover from the second Trial and one page which has six pieces with an illustration of each of the 6 machines used during the Second Trial. The latter six pages have twelve covers, including four Victoria usage. 4120 cover image1902 (Jan 1): ½ d. pale yellowish-green, perf. 14, used on cover, from Manchester to London, dated 24 December 1909, cancelled by a fine and clear strike of the Manchester Posted in Advance for Christmas Columbia Machine cancel in black. The envelope unsealed and sent at the printed-matter rate. Slight rusting to right side which has disturbance and a tine spot top none of which detracts, otherwise fine and an unusally fine strike of this postmark. 4121 piece image1902 (Jan 1): 1 d. scarlet, perf. 14, perfin, used on piece, dated 18 May 1905, tied by a First Day of the 'Krag Trial' London WC Experimental Continuous-Impression Machine cancel in black. The town die being in the continental style and with seven straight bars. Top left of adhesive has clipped perfs. otherwise fine. A rare example; one of three examples known. The piece comes with seven other covers all with Krag cancellations from later trials and usage. 4122 cover image1912: Wilkinson 'Penny in a Slot' Machine Trial comprising two covers. A First Day of Use envelope, with crisp "London EC / 1 D / Postage Paid / Crown" in red with a London EC double circle in black dated 25 January 1912 and a Last Day of Use cover, with the same paid mark in a dark red-brown and the same London cds 31 August 1912. Sent from different senders (the former a Postmaster at the GPO) but with enclosures informing the recipient of the first and last day nature of the posting. Note: The coin-fed machine, for public-use, was a self-service stampless postmarking machine, devloped by Mr F. Wolkinson of Braintree.The mailer inserted a 1 d. coin along with the cover, rotated the hand-crank, whereupon a "London EC / 1 D / Postage Paid / Crown" single circle postmark in red would be applied to the cover, which was retained by the machine until retrieved by a postal clerk, who subsequently applied a second postmark indicating the date and time. During the seven month trial 12,000 mail items were postmarked(Image 1) (Image 2)

4123 cover image1856-1955: Cover accumulation comprising 64 examples of which a third are from the Victoria era, the others a selection from Edward VII to George VI and a few Elizabeth II. There are a number of better frankings, such as a 1870 four-colour combination cover from London to USA franked with line engraved 1 d. red and 2 d. blue with surface printed, 3 d. rose and 6 d. lilac, also two transatlantic covers franked with 1856 1 s. green plate 1 to New York one which is sent from Manchester tied by the Spoon duplex cancel the other sent from Sheffield, a selection of registered stationery envelopes uprated with Victoria adhesives, a range of postcards from Edward VII period some with machine cancels. Also noted, three stampless covers from 1853/57 with double circle 'B Crown P' handstamp. Included is a 1911 1 d. carmine, UPU postal stationery card sent to Holland cancelled by the International Machine from the Third Trial, the wavy-line obliterator with 'D' at left, dated 16 November. A scarce cover; only known foreign destination usage example. 4125 cover image1811 (Feb 12): Entire letter from James Lawrie, Seamen on board the HMS Menelaus in Plymouth Sound, endorsed on reverse "H.M. Ship Menelaus, Plymouth Sound, 12 February 1811" and signed by the Commanding Officer - however wrongly placed and the letter charged "1/2d." to pay in manuscript. The "Menelaus", a supremely succesful frigate, was departing for the Indian Ocean and Mauritius to aid forces in charge of taking the Island, already achieved in December 1810.
