4089 cover image1871/74: Collection of Sloper Perforated Experimental Machine cancels comprising sixteen examples on 1871 ½ d. pale lilac postal stationery cards, set-out upon seven exhibition pages. Includes eight examples of the Sloper Arrow cancel illustrating the various types and varieties of punch hole size and broken needle pins (8), seven examples of the Manchester Clip marking normally found on the right side of the card, although there are two examples of the mark appearing on the left one of which has the marking on both sides. 4092 cover image1878: Stampless dummy cover with the Vaile Experimental Trial Machine cancellation in black. Despite the trial taking place in London during April 1878 all the dater dials indicate "C / N.Z. / AUCKLAND / SE 2 / 74". The cancel having a three line continuous bar obliterator with two dater dials. The machine was rejected by the Post Office. Rare; one of seven surviving examples, five of which are in private hands and two in the British Postal Archives(Image 1) (Image 2)

To the reverse an arrival cds in black (OC 26). Central horizontal filing crease well clear of adhesive. Fine 4 d. single franking. Rare example; only known '1884' overseas destination Hoster mail. Note: Dubus does not illustrate this exact cancel. Crown sideways, perf. 14, used on a mourning cover, London to Melbourne, Australia, dated 29 October 1885, tied by the London EC Hoster Machine cancel, type V (Dubus Type 35), endorsed 'By the first mail steamer / Oct 29th 1885'. To the reverse an arrival cds in black (December 7). Opening tears top not affecting adhesive and some slight soiling. Otherwise fine and scarce. Additionally, comes with eight other examples of the Hoster cancellation on cover or card, including seven Type IV (Dubus Type 33), one of which is to India and one example with Type V, the latter on cover to Sweden. To the reverse a Winston and Darlington cds both in black (January 14). Part of flap missing and torn which has caused a small amount of top of envelope to be missing just above the adhesive which is unaffected. The rarest of all Hoster cancels. Seldom available. Crown, perf. 14, used on cover, London to Nelson, New Zealand, redirected to Christchurch, dated 18 May 1887, cancelled by a fine strike of the Hoster Trial Machine cancellation in black, Type IX (Dubus Type 40), with New Zealand 1882/1900 2 d. lilac alongside applied for the redirection and tied by a Nelson duplex cancel in black (June 29). To the reverse an arrival cds in black (July 2). Top right corner clipped and some minor wrinkles and small tear to edges. Otherwise fine and scarce usage; only known redirected cover example with double franking and the Hoster Machine cancel, which was only used for foreign-destination mail. Additionally comes with a cover franked with Jubilee ½ d. vermilion and 2 d. grey-green & carmine (SG 197/200) sent to Dresden cancelled by the same Hoster postmark(Image 1)

4101 cover image1887 (Jan 1): 2½ d. purple on blue, wmk. Crown, perf. 14, used on small envelope (93 x 75 mm.), London to Dunieres, France, dated 22 November 1890, tied by the London EC Hoster Machine cancel, Type IX (Dubus Type 40), with faint Calais transit double circle in black alongside (Nov 23). To the reverse a purple hotel cachet and an arrival cds in green (Nov 24). Small part of flap missing otherwise fine. An attractive and rare example; smallest known size mail handled by the Hoster Machine. Additionally, comes with nineteen further covers (11) or cards (8) all cancelled by the London Hoster Machine, including Types 9-13, to various locations and a range of rates/frankings. Noted; attractive 1891 printed illustrated advertising envelope for the New York Herald London franked with an 1881 1 d. lilac sent locally cancelled by the Type XII Hoster. The wrapper being an envelope cut at both ends. Has horizontal filing crease and two diagonally of which there is a repaired tear to the right of the adhesive. This cancel was for domestic newspaper mail and as such is normally only found on the ½ d. brown newspaper wrapper (Dubus Type 48). Rare; only known example(Image 1) (Image 2)

4105 cover image1878: ½ d. brown, postal stationery card, with clothing advertisement to back, used from London to Bradford, dated 2 February 1887, cancelled by the 'Dot Matrix' Hoster Trial Machine cancellation in black. Some imperfections to the corners and a small tear on right side, otherwise fine (H&B CP6). This postmark was in use between 2 February and 21 March 1887. This being the earliest known usage.
