Crown CC, perf. 12½, surcharged ONE PENNY with Thin Bar (A), two used examples in combination with 1863 4 d. carmine, imperforate with clear to large margins all round, on underpaid but accepted 1865 cover to Marseille, tied by dotted cork obliterator in black. Oval framed "ST. HELENA" datestamp above (June 20), thence with "London / Paid" cds in red and Calais entry marking (July 18) in black. Marseille arrival cds (July 19) on reverse. Including an article by Hibbert from The Philatelist' (April 1970) where he conjectures the under-payment was due to the stamps all being of the same colour. Manuscript "7" in red crayon credit to GB and oval framed "ST. HELENA" despatch datestamp in blue (earliest recorded usage in blue) adjacent (Oct 20), "London / Paid" transit cds in red (Nov 25) and Calais entry marking in black all on obverse. Officer's rate and possibly mailed on board or on arrival. Struck with "s1/-" charge marking for double the 6 d. deficiency with "CAPE PACKET / DEVONPORT" datestamp alongside (June 24). Reverse with minor flap fault but showing Crest of "HMS Antelope", Dunkeld cds and Ballanluig arrival (June 27). A rare and most unusual cover.rnrnProvenance: Harmers, London, 28 Jan 1998, lot 696.
