40140 imageBritish New Guinea 1895/96: Queensland 5 d. purple-brown affixed to 1896 registered cover to Sydney, NSW cancelled by "BNG" nine barred obliterator with superb "SAMARAI / 22 JUN 96 / B.N.G." datestamp and "REGISTERED / SAMARA B.N.G" alongside in black. Reverse with Cookstown, Queensland transit (July 9) and Sydney arrival (July 18). The adhesive with slight peripheral aging but this is the earliest recorded registered cover from British New Guinea. It is believed that electrotypes of this design were inadvertently placed in the sheet of the 1898 6 d. value. An exceedingly rare stamp, only known in used condition, this being one of the finest of the few recorded. Cert.
