470 imageGold Coast 1940, 1 d. red-brown, 6 d. purple and 2 s. blue-violet, used on air mail cover, from Accra to Tientsin, China, dated 8 November 1949, censor marks in Gold Coast and Hong Kong, with Gold Coast censor label resealed, endorsed "via Lagos, Kano and Khartoum", with Hong Kong GPO Registered datestamp to reverse dated 25 November 1940, and arrival Tientsin dated 7 December 1940, carried on Imperial Airways Africa route, then onto Karachi and Singapore, the air service to Hong Kong had ceased at this time and transfer was therefore by sea, the last leg also via sea, scarce and interesting cover.  (Image 1) (Image 2)

471 image1943 (Aug.28): WWII, Red Cross Postal Message Scheme, 6 d. purple and 1 s. black and olive, used on registered air mail cover, from Accra (Gold Coast) to Geneva, dated 28 August 1943, endorsed "Red Cross Postal Message Scheme" and with British Red Cross cachet in purple front and to reverse, passed by censor in Gold Coast and again by German occupying forces in Paris (code X on reverse), arrival mark in Geneva dated 26 September 1943, has central vertical filing crease clear of adhesives, rare example; less than a handful of covers using the Red Cross Postal Message Scheme with British Red Cross markings are known; routing uncertain. 472 image1944, Lignes Aeriennes Militaries (LAM) air mail; Gold Coast, 1 s. 3 d. brown and turquoise blue, used on cover, from Tafo to M'balmayo, French Cameroon, dated 4 March 1944, extensively censored both in Gold Coast (opened / resealed), in Cameroon (Controle Postal Militaire tape) and handstamped on both sides, carried by fortnighly LAM service to Douala with "OUVERT / PAR / L'AUTORITE MILITARIRE" handstamp, also "CONTROLE POSTALE Commission / TERRITOIRE DU CAMEROUN", the service effectively a circular route from Fort Lamy (now N'Djamena, Chad), the delivery between Douala and M'balmayo by surface mail, with datestamps on reverse, Douala 13th and M'balmayo 15th, scarce air mail internally within Africa, interesting cover. 473 image1939/1940, Six WWII air mail covers originating from the Gold Coast, using aeromaritime arrangements and or Air France, all with censor marks, almost entirely typed or printed commercial envelopes, includes four registered covers, some interesting routes, destinations include; Brasil, USA (2), Sudan, Sierra Leone, and Italy, varied frankings, additonally a 1938 cover from Accra to Roslindale, USA, endorsed "Imperial Airways" which was carried on BOAC service via Khartoum to Marseille, then ship from Southampton to New York and air to destination, all mounted and comprehensively written-up on exhibition pages. 352 image1853 (June): Two Shipmail Entire letters, written in Madras on 20 & 21 June 1853 and directed to Port Louis, Mauritius, both endorsed "Lady Jocelyn", both struck by MADRAS / G.P.O. / 1853 JU 21", calling at Galle on 26 June and arriving Port Louis on 6 July with oval "PACKET LETTER MAURITIUS" on front resp. on reverse. This was the 9th return voyage of the "Lady Jocelyn". Both entires were charged the standard colonial packet rate of 1 s., as indicated in red manuscript and by the "INDIA PAID" handstamp in red.
