3067 image60 reis grey-black, Intermediate Impression, the used block of four from the 2nd. Large Plate, lower left stamp with closed tear just touching central design and same stamp with some ageing, sharing bold strikes of scarce "VICTORIA" handstamps (Ayres fig. 1183) complete in black. Ironed horizontal bend between the stamps but despite the small faults a remarkable and most attractive multiple. Illustrated in "Bull's Eyes" by H. 3068 image60 reis black, Early Impression, a fine ample to large margined example, First Composite Plate, State A (position 7), used on 20 January 1844 entire letter to Rio de Janeiro tied by bold strike of straight line "S. JOAO.DEL REI" straight line handstamp (Ayres fig. 1170) in black. Minor vertical file fold well away from the adhesive but a remarkable and extremely rare entire, especially so with the adhesive applied on the obverse of the cover. Illustrated in Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 261. Queluz to Rio de Janeiro, cancelled in manuscript "1844 - Agto. 11" and by straight line "V. D. QUELUZ" handstamp in brown. Adhesive lifted for checking and climactic ageing removed and ironed file fold at right. Docketing of receipt at left. Illustrated in "Bull's Eyes" by H. Bunselmeyer Ferreira on page 231 and in Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page. 234 - although the cover is not ex Caspary. A fine and extremely rare entire that opens well for Exhibit display, this being the sole recorded usage of this cancellation on a Bull's Eye cover. Certs. 3075 image60 reis black, Late Early Impression horizontal pair with enormous margins all round (Second Large Plate, State C, positions 17-18), used on July 1844 entire letter from Montevideo, Uruguay to the U.S. Consul in Rio Grande, with cover endorsed "Vapor" at lower left. Carried privately from Montevideo to the care of a Forwarding Agent, with reverse showing "Rio de Janeiro, Aug 29, forwarded by C. Coleman & Co.", who applied the adhesives which are neatly tied by bold "Correio Geral Da Corte" circular datestamp (Aug 30) in black, paying the 'By Sea' rate of 120 reis. Illustrated in Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 117. Some splitting on one file fold mentioned for accuracy, otherwise a marvellous and extremely rare entire in paramount condition-certainly one of the prettiest Bulls Eye covers-and one of the great rarities of South American Maritime philately, this being the earliest entire letter from Uruguay bearing an adhesive postage stamp. Reverse with "London / F.B.O." (Foreign Branch Office) datestamp of April 3rd. in black, and mailed on to Rio de Janeiro per Naval Packet "Express" with British Post Office arrival datestamp (May 16) in black also on front. Forwarded from Rio de Janeiro with manuscript "Forwarded by C. Coleman & Co." who applied the adhesives - a horizontal pair of 1843 Early Worn Impression 60 reis grey, close to ample magins all round neatly tied by "Correio Geral Da Corte" datestamp (May 30) in black. Docketing of receipt inside (August 6). Illustrated in Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 118. A magnificent Bulls Eye usage on incoming letter that opens well for Exhibit display: the sole Bulls Eye cover to be handled by the British Post Office. Unique. Signed Holcombe (1988). Cert. 3078 image60 r. black, fine impression, two horizontal pairs used on reverse of 1844 entire letter at third weight step to the U.S. Consul in Rio Grande, both pairs from Large Plate, State B with large margins all round and of excellent rich colour (positions 43-44 and 45-46), each pair neatly tied by 'CORREIO GERAL DA CORTE' datestamps (July 30) in black. The area around the seal has been strengthened to protect the adhesives which have been removed for checking and replaced, otherwise fine. Illustrated in Juchert "Bull's Eyes on Covers" on page 141. Just four covers are known bearing four 60 reis adhesives: only two with a strip of four. A splendid and particularly beautiful Bulls Eye cover for the connoisseur. Cert.
