4779 imageWingate Mission 1904: 1 a. grey-black & red, a used example on 1909 cover to Cambridge tied by "Berbera / Somailiand" cds (May 7) in black. The cover, with full contents was written on May 4th from Upper Sheikh where there were no postal facilities at this time, from C.H. Armbruster (senior Inspector for the Sudan Government), and a member of the "Wingate Mission". Interesting contents regarding the journey from Berbera up to Sheikh with the comment "Sir R. W(ingate), doesn't mind what one wears all day so long as one turns up in a jacket to dinner".rnrnNote: The Wingate Mission was headed by Lt.-General Sir Reginald Wingate with Baron Rudolf von Slatin Pasha, they amongst others were in Somaliland from 21 April until 17 June 1909 to negotiate with the 'Mad Mullah' for peace due to the escalating costs of internal security to the administration in Somaliland.rnrnProvenance: Collection Sir John Inglefield-Watson, Spink, London, 3 Oct 2007, lot 1466. Crown CA, all in unused blocks of four, each overprinted "SPECIMEN" (Samuel type D12) in black, the 2 r. with one tone spot on gum, fresh colours, upper pairs with protective hinge, lower pairs unmounted og. Extremely rare for Specimens of this period to be found in multiples other than strips of three (and even these are very unusual), the blocks therefore may have been prepared for prentation purposes rather than for distribution to the UPU.rnrnProvenance: Harmers, London, 8 July 1999, lot 1386.
