10036 image1854/59: Diadem 6 d. greenish grey, imperforate, a used example with large margins all round but defective at top, applied on edge of 1857 cover to Camden Town, London endorsed "Per "European" (via Melbourne?)" and cancelled in black. Struck with framed "TOO LATE" in black and further framed "INSUFFICIENTLY / STAMPED" alongside. Backstamped "Sydney / New South Wales" despatch cds (March 11) with London arrival in red (June 12) on obverse. Carried on the "Behar" departing Sydney on 22 Jan, thence by the "Nubia" from Galle to Suez and the "Valetta" from Alexandria to Marseilles. Cockermouth arrival cds on reverse (March 17). 10047 image1860/72: Diadem 1 s. rose-carmine, perf. 13 used in combination with De La Rue 1871 2 d. blue, 3 d. yellow-green and 6 d. bright mauve on 1874 double rate cover to Nantes, France endorsed "p. Ellorra" tied by "Sydney / NSW" duplexes (July 9). Readdressed from Nantes and reverse with Ancenis arrival (Aug 31) cds. The cover was carried to Melbourne on the "Ellora", on the "Baroda" to Galle, from Galle on the "Cathay" and the "Bangalore" from Alexandria. A fine four colour franking at additional "Retaliatory Penny" rate (in force between 10 Feb 1874 until 27 May 1875). Rare.rn (Image 1) (Image 2)
