6188 image1883 (Aug 28): Appendix sheets in two halves for "Ceylon Postage Stamps, Existing and Proposed Schemes of Colours" with 1882 2 c., 4 c., 8 c., 16 c. and 1872 24 c. on top sheet (Gi. 146, 148, 150, 151, 127), and new colours to align with UPU guidelines for 2 c. dull green, 4 c. rose and 24 c. brown-purple with Trial Perforation 12 (Gi 151a, 151b and 151c = £ 21'500), alongside. Second sheet shows Imperforate examples of 1872 32 c. slate, 36 c. blue, 48 c. rose, 64 c. red-brown, 96 c. drab and 2 r. 50 c. dull rose, perf. 12½ all round (Gi 141 = £ 3'250) with proposed colours of 36 c. in olive-green, perf. 12 and unissued 48 c. in pale brown, perf. 12; the balance noted as "These Colours cannot be improved upon". A truly extraordinary Appendix sheet with the three rarest perforated stamps of Ceylon - the only collector who ever assembled the 2 c., 4 c. and 24 c. with Trial perforation 12 was Arthur Hind in 1934, he also possessed an example of the 36 c. olive-green (a full listing is contained with the lot) and only 'Besançon' equalled this feat by the purchase of these sheets. Illustrated in the De La Rue Collection edited by Frank Walton RDP on page 2519. A magnificent pair of sheets and entirely unique Gi = £ 25'000+.rnNote: The Royal Collection of His Majesty King Charles III contains a 2 c. dull green and 4 c. rose with Trial perf. 12. It does not contain examples of the 24 c. brown-purple or the 36 c. olive-green.rnProvenance: Robson Lowe & Japan Philatelic Co., Tokyo, 15-16 Feb 1980, lot 107. (Image 1)
