6347 imageMombasa Provisionals 1891 (Jan): Provisional "½ Anna" handstamped surcharge in dull violet on 2 a. vermilion, watermarked, a used example, variety "Original Face Value Not Obliterated", countersigned "AD" (Andrew Dick, chief accountant of the Imperial British East Africa Co.) in black ink at Mombasa, of fine colour and superb appearance, lightly cancelled by MOMBASA circular datestamp (June 1891) in black with blue crayon line typical of a usage from the C.M.S. Mission at Freretown. The surcharge was normally applied over the vignette and a horizontal ink line drawn through the value at base. The surcharge having been applied too low, it is presumed the clerk charged with the application of obliterating the previous value believed there was no space to do so. An outstanding example of an exceedingly rare stamp: one of just 5 examples recorded. Signed Herbert Bloch Gi = £ 3'750. rnrnProvenance: Collection John Minns, Sotheby's, London, 25-25 April 2001, lot 60. (Image 1) (Image 2)

Mackenzie, IBEA Co. Bank Manager) in black ink at Mombasa, of fine colour and very fine appearance, cancelled by MOMBASA circular datestamps (Oct 15, 1894) in black (John Minns "British East Africa", page 42). The pair with slight paper adherence on reverse but a fine and extremely rare multiple of a very scarce stamp. Cert. BPA (1983) Gi = £ 3'500.rnrnNote: Given that Victor H. Mackenzie had been dead for 2 years when this pair was cancelled, it must be supposed that the twelve examples known used on this date must have been found in either his home or the bank's premises and applied to a cover or sheet of paper and cancelled by favour.
