Transit San Francisco (20 Sep). SS Great Republic which departed from Hong Kong picked up US bound mail from Shanghai at Yokoaham and arived San Francisco on 18 Sep.

On reverse with scarce Marine Detachment of American Embassy Peiping, China origin cds. Transit 4th Regiment USMC Shanghai China (17 Jan). Arrived Washington (21 Feb). Very sacrce diplomatic mail from US Embassy at Peiping. The USMC 4th Marine Regiment stationed in Shanghai from 1927 to 1941 to protect American citizens and their property in the Shanghai International Settlement, during the Northern Expedition and the Second Sino-Japanese War.

Arrived USA (19 Dec). Redirected to Customs Mengtsz via Laokay (9 Oct), Hanoi (10 Oct) and arrived on 27 Oct. Further redirected to Customs Canton via Laokay (3 Nov), Haiphong (9 Nov), Hong Kong (12 Nov). Very interesting and unique mail redirected for twice.

Address crossed by crayon and changed to Shanghai but no Shanghai return cds. Cover opened out for display. 2004 (Dec) Zurich Asia, lot 9. Ex- Anna-Lisa and Sven-Eric Beckeman.

Shunzhi Year 18(1661) Imperial Edict in form of silk scroll, written in Chinese, conferring the honorary title of Lady to the wife of the naval commander stationed at Yangtze River, applied with bilingual “Imperial Decrees” red seal. Despite the Manchu text part was trimmed, the essential Chinese text was reserved and presents in nice condition. In Mar 2025 AVA Spring sale, another imperial edict dated Kangxi Year 23 was hammered at HKD$30000. This one, however, dated even early.

順治十八年（1661）誥命，授操江提督淑人李氏為“夫人”，五彩織錦，鈐“制誥之寳”。雖然僅留下中文部分，但品相上佳，字體及內容清晰。2025年3月艾華春拍中，一件相似的康熙廿三年誥命以港幣3萬元落槌。此件年份更早。(Image 1) (All Images)
