Teese & Co. Penny Post
Lot Symbol Catalog No Descrip Opening
3187 137L1, 11A imageTeese & Co. Penny Post, 137L1, 1c Blue on Bluish, Tied on Cover with #11A 3c Brownish Carmine
Extremely Fine, Most Beautiful Example Among the Six Other Recorded Tied Covers

The Teese & Co. stamp with ample margins all around, a most remarkable example. Both stamps tied by an indistinct "PA. MAY 21, (1852)" postmark, addressed to Strosburg, Penn. Steven M. Roth recorded twelve Teese and Co. covers in his 1993 Penny Post census, including six genuinely tied examples. One previously listed tied cover is now known to be a Fox fake, reducing the total to six. This cover was not known to Roth at the time of his census and represents an additional genuinely tied example, bringing the count of genuine tied covers to seven. This is an exceptional and newly documented tied example from this scarce Philadelphia local post.

3189 Stamp 170L2 imageUnion Despatch, 170L2, 10c Brown, Used
Extremely Scarce, Only One Other Known

Illustrated in Carl Kane's Article "New Ten Cent Stile's Union Despatch Adhesive" Kane describes this 10c stamp as a previously unreported discovery, and is one of only two known. He notes that most of the remaining examples likely were lost during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.
