4001 image1850 Pre-Statehood California Stampless Folded Letter, Transcontinental From San Francisco to Maryland, Large Black "40" Rate Handstamp
Rare 40c California to Atlantic Coast Rate, Pre-Statehood

Stampless folded letter datelined San Francisco, August 27, 1850, addressed to Maryland. San Francisco 27 AUG circular datestamp and a manuscript “40” rate marking, rated for the 40c transcontinental rate established by the Act of August 14, 1848 for letters conveyed between the Pacific Coast and the Atlantic states. This rate remained in effect until June 29, 1851. The letter predates California statehood, which occurred on September 9, 1850. The enclosed letter contains interesting content discussing receipt of earlier mail, plans to depart for the mines, expectations of winter conditions, family news, financial remittances, agricultural observations, weather patterns, and social life in California during the Gold Rush.
