3161 106L1 imageMessenkope’s Union Square Post Office, 106L1, 1c Black on Green, Manuscript Obliteration Cancel on Illustrated Corner Card Cover
Certified Example of Dunham’s Crossed-Out Messenkope Adhesive

A very fine example, with manuscript obliteration of "Messenkopes", which Hahn identifies as a practice of Dunham during his ownership of the Union Square Post. Hahn noted in his article in 2001 that no such crossed-out example had been certified. This one is.  Only three other covers are known with the Messenkope name crossed out. The stamp with minor enamel loss in the upper left margin, is afixed to an illustrated Dr. Shew's New York Water Cure Institution corner card cover mailed to Cohoes, New York. The cover entered the mails with a red "New York 5cts May 27" integral rate datestamp. The original 1851 enclosure is included.
