7391 136L15 imageSwarts' City Dispatch Post, 136L15, 1c Red, "for U.S. Mail", Three Large Margins, Tied by 5-Point Star and New York Circular Datestamp on Piece
Stamp with large margins on three sides, touching at right, tied by 5-point star cancel and red "New-York Paid 3cts Aug 23" circular datestamp on piece. Manuscript "Paid 3" and pencil "3". The red "For U.S. Mail" issue was produced by Swarts in 1851 following the introduction of the 1c rate. Examples printed in red are notably scarcer than the later blue stamps of the same design. The Caspary collection contained a small piece and a repaired example on cover, while the Middendorf collection lacked a representative example.  Larry Lyons records only eight on cover examples known.References: The Penny Post, Issue 47, Vol 12.
