7362 Stamp 122L1 imagePrince's Letter Dispatch, 122L1, Black, Collection of All Known Handstamp Usages
A Comprehensive Reference Group Assembling Every Recorded Cancel Type on 122L1

A study group of Prince's Letter Dispatch 122L1 stamps assembled to illustrate every recorded handstamp usage on the issue. The group includes examples tied or cancelled by the blue "11 State St." company oval, the blue serrated company handstamp, the "Prince's Boston & Portland Express" handstamp paired with a Boston circular datestamp, and Boston circular datestamps in black, blue, and red. There are 10 stamps in this offering. Prince's Letter Dispatch operated between Boston and Portland in 1861, and 122L1 is the only adhesive issued by the firm. Assembled reference holdings showing the full range of cancellation types are exceptional, and this group offers a complete survey for the specialist or exhibitor.(Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9)

7363 Stamp 127L1 imageRicketts & Hall, 127L1, 1c Red on Bluish, Outer Circle Removed, Unused
Among the Great Rarities of United States Local Posts, The Only Unused Example

Unused, with the outer circle bearing the firm name and address removed with a small thin spot at top. The Ricketts & Hall One Cent Dispatch stamp is among the great rarities of United States local posts. Kelly, who devoted decades to studying Baltimore private posts, recorded only half a dozen examples and wrote that the circular stamps issued by Ricketts & Hall "are among the real rarities of United States locals." Gronowski's 1994 census in The Penny Post identified seven examples. There has been one additional discovery since, bringing the total to eight. Of these, four retain the full outer label and four have the outer circle cut away — believed to reflect sale to a successor proprietor. Only three are recorded on cover. This is the sole example recorded as unused among the eight known, and the only off-cover example without a pencil cancellation. The post operated for no more than five months from No. 4 Rechabite Hall in Baltimore beginning February 1857, and the tiny volume of mail handled accounts for the stamp's extraordinary rarity. No forgeries are known.
