Whittlesey's Express
Lot Symbol Catalog No Descrip Opening
7404 146L1 imageWhittlesey's Express, 146L1, 2c Red, Ample to Large Margins, Tied on Small Piece by Blue Company Oval Handstamp
Very Fine Example of this Local Rarity, Only Six Recorded Used Examples

Stamp tied by clear strike of the blue "Whittelsey's Letter Express" oval handstamp on piece, with small tear at upper left. Aside from the ex-Hall block of twelve and a small number of unused singles, only six used examples of 146L1 are recorded; no covers are known. Whittelsey & Co. began its Chicago express operation in late 1857, listed in the 1857–58 Cooke's directory at 194 Lake Street. The firm does not appear in the following year's directory, having evidently closed as the proprietors, first cousins Edmund A. and Samuel M. Whittelsey, relocated west.
