New York City Express Post
Lot Symbol Catalog No Descrip Opening
7344 111L1 imageNew York City Express Post, 111L1, 2c Black on Green Glazed, Cut to Shape, on 1847 Folded Letter to Great Barrington, Mass.
Only Recorded Example with Hudson River Route Agent Datestamp and Very Fine Tied Example

Signed Elliott Perry Stamp cut to shape and tied by red "5" rate handstamp with matching "Hudson Riv. Mail N.Y. Jul. 26" route agent circular datestamp on 1847 folded letter to Great Barrington, Massachusetts with manuscript "Paid" crossed out at top right. The stamp with a vertical crease at bottom and a small piece replaced at left. This New York City Express Post adhesive is often confused with Boyd's Eagle design because of their similar appearance, but the issue is considerably scarcer. Only about 15 covers are recorded, including both the Black on Green Glazed and Orange on White varieties. All examples were carried to the mails, and only roughly half are recorded with the stamp tied. This tied example is very fine in appearance, and is the only recorded New York City Express Post example bearing a Hudson River route agent datestamp.

7349 imageOverton & Co., Manuscript "Overton's Express" Marking and "Paid 6 1/4" on 1844 Folded Letter from Peekskill to Quakertown, NJ
Only Known Usage by Overton & Co. To-The-Mails

Folded letter, datelined October 12, 1844, with manuscript "Overton's Express Oct. 15th" and "Paid 6¼" express rate marking. Addressed to Hiram Deats at Quaker Town, New Jersey with red "New York Oct. 15" circular datestamp with manuscript "10". Express paid notation crossed out. File fold and minor flap tear. The letter was carried from Peskskill, NY to New York City via the Hudson River by Overton and then to Qauker Town, NJ by the US Post Office. The sender paid Overton & Co. 6. 1/4 c to transmit this letter, but when it entered the mails in New York, it was rated 10c due in manuscript and the "Paid 6 1/4" obliterated This an an extremely rare to-the-mails Overton's cover, as it is the only known usage.

7350 imageOverton & Co., Perfectly Struck Three-Line "COLLECT/6/CENTS" Handstamp with Boyd's City Express Post Red Oval on 1845 Folded Letter
Extremely Fine and Choice Combination of Intercity Independent Mails and Locals Service

Perfectly struck "COLLECT/6/CENTS" three-line handstamp of Overton & Co. on May 22, 1845 folded letter from Lansingburgh, New York to to local street address. Manuscript “Collect 6-1/4” and red “Boyd’s City Express Post May 6 9 O’C” oval datestamp. The “Collect 6 Cents” marking is very rare, and the conjunctive usage with Boyd's makes this a highly desirable usage.
