1896, incoming postal card, British Honduras 3 c. carmine, commercially used with comprehensive messgae written in German from "BELIZE JA 15 96" and addressed to Pastor Gottschalk at Berlin-Foundling House in Hongkong, transit marks London 3.2. and Singapore 3.3. alongside, vertical fold but interesting and unusual. The Berlin Foundling Society established a charitable mission in Hong Kong in 1850 to take care of Chinese infants which were given away by their parents.

1898, Oct 24, incoming registered letter from Funchal via London, New York, San Francisco and Shanghai to Pekin showing the registration label of Funchal and the registration exchange label of San Francisco. Franked Funchal 180 Reis, addressed to the Director of Posts at Pekin. The letter arrived in December of 1898. As this was during the winter a special fee in Pekin was due (so-called "Winter Overland Courier Service"). Recipients were allowed to obtain at the post office a "Private Box" against a fee so that they did not have pay for every single letter but could pay monthly in one sum. This system was applied here and consequently the letter got the boxed "To Pay" cancellation. (Corresponding philatelic literature accompanies the lot). There are no further letters from Funchal to China known showing this procedure. A new discovery of Auction Galleries Hamburg! ÷ 1898, 24.Oktober, Einschreibbrief aus Funchal, über London, New York, San Francisco und Shanghai nach Peking. Mit R.-Zettel von Funchal und R.-Exchange-Zettel von San Francisco. Empfänger war der Direktor der Post in Peking, Ankunft des Briefes im Dezember 1898. Da der Brief im Winter in Peking ankam, unterlag er einer Sondergebühr (Winter Overland Courier Service) - China war zu der Zeit kein UPU-Mitglied. Die Empfänger konnten gegen eine Gebühr eine "Private Box" erhalten und mussten nicht jede Sendung einzeln bezahlen, sondern rechneten monatlich ab. Bei diesem Brief ist dies der Fall und der Brief trägt dementsprechend den Rahmenstempel "To Pay". (Entsprechende Literatur liegt bei). Von Funchal ist kein weiterer Brief aus dieser Zeit nach China bekannt. Eine Neuentdeckung der Auction Galleries!

1861, A LADIES`ENVELOPE SENT WITHIN VIRGINIA: 10c. Jefferson blue with large margins all around franked on backside of a ladies`valentine with beautiful embossed floral design. The stamp tied to cover by a bold strike of MARTINSVILLE, Va. cds , addressed to a Miss Morrison on Leatherwood, Henry County, Virginia.
The upper flap of the envelope is partly separated and strengthened by hinges from the backside otherwise a very fresh and fine Civil War item. Caffaz photo cert. ÷ 1861, ein Damenbrief innerhalb von Virginia gelaufen - 10c. Jefferson blau, mit allseits großen Rändern, frankiert auf der Rückseite eines Damenbriefs, vorderseitig mit schönem geprägtem Blumendesign. Die Marke ist auf dem Umschlag mit einem kräftigen Abschlag von MARTINSVILLE, Va. entwertet, Brief adressiert an eine Miss Morrison in Leatherwood, Henry County, Virginia. Die obere Klappe des Umschlags ist teilweise angetrennt und rückseitig mit Scharnieren verstärkt, ansonsten ein sehr frisches und schönes Stück aus dem Bürgerkrieg. Fotoattest Caffaz (1998).
