Both carried on S.S "Imperator" which sailed from New York on Dec. 11th, arriving at Southampton ten days later, the mails damaged by appalling weather en route, scarce from St. Kitts. (2). SOUTH AFRICA SOUTH AFRICA Lot Symbol Descrip Opening 1900 Cape of Good Hope. 1875 (Aug 14) Cover from Cape Town to England headed "From 2710 S.S Mingo Sergt R.M R.N Hospital, Simons Town, Cape of Good Hope S.A" and countersigned by the Fleet Surgeon, franked by two 1d Cape stamps, apparently an attempt at a 2d concession rate for a double weight letter. The soldiers and sailors rate only applied to single letters up to ½oz, therefore endorsed "exceeding ½oz" and charged 2/- as an unpaid letter (altered from 2/4), a little soiled, vertical fold and small nick out of left edge, nevertheless an exceptional disallowed soldiers rate cover.
