1351 P.O.W Mail. 1914-17 Stampless covers with violet "En Franchise de taxe", two 1914 (Dec) covers also with violet "PASSED / COMMANDANT P.of W.", 1917 cover headed "O.A.S" with "Passed Censor Singapore", all with Singapore datestamps. The two 1914 covers sent within Singapore or to Penang, the 1917 cover to a passenger on a ship at Sourabaya with "N.I POSTAGENT / SINGAPORE" backstamp, one 1914 cover very fine, the others with some faults. (3).

1352 imagePenang. 1914 (July 30) Registered cover to USA, posted at Alor Star five days before war was declared franked on the reverse with ten Kedah 4c stamps, detained at Penang for nearly four months with Penang datestamps of 31 July and 18 November, censored with the rare "E. (arms) R / OPENED BY THE / CENSOR AND / OFFICIALLY / SEALED" label tied by violet oval framed initials "A.W.D". Censor labels were strangely printed during the reign of King Edward VII (possibly in anticipation of P.O.W camps being established in Malaya during the Boer War?) only reappearing in Penang in 1914 where a few were used until King George V labels were received in the Straits. Rare, only about half a dozen examples recorded. Photo on Page 176. (Image1)

1354 Penang. 1915-18 Covers (33) and fronts (2) all censored in Penang, various cachets include boxed "PASSED / LETTER CENSOR", "PASSED / LETTER CENSOR / PENANG", "PASSED BY / POSTAL CENSOR / PENANG", "PASSED / BY CENSOR / PENANG", "POSTAL CENSOR'S OFFICE", "PASSED BY / ASSISTANT / POSTAL CENSOR / PENANG A" or "PASSED BY / ASSISTANT POSTAL CENSOR / PENANG" (both very scarce), unframed "LETTER CENSOR'S OFFICE / G.P.O", nineteen with censor seals. One 1916 cover with "AR" crossed out and fine "N.I POSTAGENT / PENANG" c.d.s, some faults, 23 largely fine, a good lot. (35).

1357 Singapore. 1915-19 Covers censored in Singapore with circular eye cachet (3) or "PASSED CENSOR / SINGAPORE", unframed eye cachet, straight line "PASSED BY CENSOR", "Passed by Censor" (3), "OPENED BY CENSOR" (2) or "PASSED CENSOR SINGAPORE" (4), also covers from Malaya censored in India (2) and 1915 cover from Singapore to Persia with an accompanying letter to the Censor asking for the enclosed letters concerning opium be forwarded. Some faults, a good group with some scarce cachets. (18).
