1910 imageSt Helena. 1850 Stampless cover from Chancellor Emile Kuhlmann of the French Consulate at Zanzibar to his father in Colmar, France. Backstamped with boxed "FORWARDED / BY / Your obet servt / S. SOLOMON / ST. HELENA", London backstamp (Dec 6) and "SHIP LETTER" with red boxed "COLONIES / &c. ART. 13", Calais and Colmar datestamps, charged "1/2" (crossed out) and 1/4, finally charged 30 decimes in France. Opened out, otherwise fine, a unique and remarkable cover. The Kuhlmann correspondence (comprising seven cover from Zanzibar, ten covers from France or Aden to Zanzibar, 1850-56) are described and illustrated in "Zanzibar's Postal History Legacy" by Gary Dubro; this is the second earliest of these letters and the only one sent via St. Helena. Wurmbach, D.O.A.G, Zanzibar" with blue "Deutsche Ostafrikanische Gesellschaft" label on reverse, all cancelled by "ZANZIBAR" squared circles with three corner bars, the last cover possibly originating in German East Africa. 1913 German P.O. 1891 (Feb 5) Cover to Germany franked 20pf, tied by "ZANZIBAR / KAISERL. DEUTSCHE / POSTAGENTUR" c.d.s, tiny fault at lower left corner, otherwise fine. The Postal Agency only open 27 August 1890 until 31 July 1891. Also 1898 postcard from Bavaria to Tanga, redirected to Zanzibar with French P.O arrival c.d.s. (2).

1914 1896 (June 2) Cover to "Lt. C. Charrington, H.M.S Philomel, Zanzibar" bearing 1896 ½a, 1a and 2½a Zanzibar overprints on B.E.A, an early use of these stamps and the only three values issued by this date. Just 1800 ½a and 1a stamps and 1200 2½a stamps issued. H.M.S "Philomel" was serving on anti-slavery patrol; on 27th August 1896 it took part in the bombardment of the Sultan's Palace. Philatelic but a scarce issue on cover.
