1877 image1927 Undenominated "Postage" Master Die Proof in purple on blue paper, attached to an archival piece endorsed "appd for 10/- duty 24.9.27" and initialled. The 10/- value was issued in 1928 in these colours, but using the "Postage & Revenue" die. An exceptional use of a Master Die for the production of a colour trial at this late date. 1881 imagec.1893 Newspaper wrappers both made of similar green paper, one with a curved flap to Bermuda bearing 1893 ½d on 4d setting 2 (S.G. 67, endorsed "Received 2 August 1893"), the other with a three sided flap to New York franked ½d green die II (lower position of wrapper below address removed), "T1" cancels. Both items probably sold as prestamped provisional issue stationery by the Post Office, the ½d surcharge only applied to mail by the Post Office and an uncommon stamp on cover. (2). 1891 1892-1936 1d Postcards (2) and covers (5) all with messages or letters from the Turks Island Postmaster, comprising 1892 1d on 1½d postcard sent to Budapest, 1896 1d card to the Colombian Consul in Jersey acknowledging a £12 Money Order for stamps, 1910 registered cover to G.B franked 3d with handwritten letter from L. Lea Smith confirming a stamp order and 1911 cover to Canada franked ¼d strip of four with a personal letter from Lea Smith, 1912 registered cover to G.B franked 2d + 4d and 1936 registered cover franked 6d to USA with enclosed forms listing stamp orders. Also 1894 preaddressed USA 1c envelope sent to the Postmaster with enclosed letter asking for details of how many stamps were surcharged ½d in 1893, with short reply "Dont know", posted back to the USA, a Turks Island stamp probably applied over the 1c embossed stamp and now removed, very unusual. (7).

1892 Cancellations/Handstamps. 1918-70 Covers, selected cancels or cachets comprising handstruck slogans (4) including 1932 "BUY / BRITISH / GOODS" (July 6, Proud HS2 only recorded in August 1932), underpaid covers with circular framed "T" (2, one with St. Lucia 1d + 2d dues), 1951 "MISSENT TO TURKS ISLAND" (not recorded by Proud), 1921 Turks Island c.d.s used at Salt Cay, 1926-29 Turks Island c.d.s code "B" used at Cockburn Harbour (3, one with enclosed letter from the Postmaster and C.O.P with datestamp), double ring datestamps of Salt Cay (4) or Cockburn Harbour (2), 1970 air letter from British F.P.O 1042, also a registered letter C.O.P and 1928 form requesting 4/7 duty on a parcel. (20).

1893 WW2 Censorship. 1942-45 Censored covers to USA (7), G.B (2), Bermuda or Virgin Islands, and a cover from USA to Grand Turk, five censored in Turks Islands with handstruck octagonal "(Crown) / PASSED / D. / 43" or a P.C 90 label "OPENED BY / EXAMINER D. / " with manuscript "43" (4), two others to USA with scarce "PASSED BY CENSOR" (one also with similar "OPENED BY CENSOR") probably applied in Turks Islands, one with P.C 90 label "I.D. / 8824" applied in Jamaica, others censored in USA (3) or G.B. A good lot, one from Cockburn Harbour. (12)

1894 Official Mail. 1924-52 Stampless O.H.M.S covers, two 1924 registered covers with violet boxed "POSTAGE / PAID" (PD4, only recorded in 1924, one with edge faults), the other five with large Official Paid c.d.s (OPD4), one 1928 cover with oval "POSTMASTER / TURKS ISLANDS" dated cachet, also a 1947 air letter franked 6d with the same Postmaster cachet in a rather worn state. (8).

1899 imageFormula Registration Envelopes. 1881-97 Envelopes comprising 1881 (Dec 15) G size envelope with boxed "REGISTERED" in serified capitals at upper left, 1891 (Mar 26) G size and 1897 (Jan 11) H size envelopes both with oval framed "R" at upper left, all to England, the first franked 4d ultramarine, the other two franked 1/- sepia. A scarce trio, registration envelopes introduced in 1881 (see postal notice in the appendix to "Challis"), one example of this first type envelope recorded by Challis in the Ludington collection; the later envelopes listed as types PRE 2/3 by Challis, who recorded three examples of the size G envelope and one size H envelope. The 1881 envelope also with the earliest recorded use of the oval Registered datestamp (R6, recorded by Proud from 1884). (3). Photo on Page 276. (Image1)
