1051 Ahmednagar Civil Camp. 1915-17 Postcard and cover to Germany both with the printed heading "CIVIL DETENUS LETTER" or "CIVIL DETENUS POST-CARD" and "Passed by Superintendent, Civil Camp, Ahmednagar", and a stampless cover from the civil camp to Switzerland, all with violet boxed "PASSED CENSOR / JHG / Superintendent / Civil Camp, Ahmednagar". Also a stampless cover from Camp B to Switzerland (redirected to Germany) with black boxed "Service of Prisoners of War / FREE POSTAGE" handstamp. A scarce group. (4).

1052 Belgaum. 1915-17 Stampless covers (8) and a postcard all handstamped "Service of Prisoners of War / Colonel / Supt. Civil Camp, Belgaum" and signed by Col. W.E Hilliard, three additionally handstamped "PASSED CENSOR / BELGAUM / W.E.H" or "PASSED CENSOR BELGAUM" (2), two to P.O.Ws at Ahmednagar. Also a P.O.W cover from the Parole Camp at Ahmednagar to Belgaum. (10).

1053 Bellary. c.1918 Printed "I am well" type P.O.W cards, the reverse text in Arabic script, the front with printed heading "PRISONERS OF WAR CORRESPONDENCE / ON POSTAL SERVICE / No stamp required" and camp imprint in English, one card used to Turkey with Bombay censor and arrival c.d.s, the other card unused. Also two official covers with cachet of the Camp Commandant to R.F Stoney in Madras, one franked Service ½a pair, the other hand delivered, and a letter from the camp to Stoney signed by Lt-Col. R.F Bidwell "I enclose a few covers and postcards as issued to Prisoners of War, these are the only types in use at this camp". The used postcard a little creased and stained, nevertheless very scarce, this card not recorded by Burrows. (5).

1054 imageDagshai. 1915 KEVII 1a Postcard from a P.O.W at Dagshai to Germany cancelled by "SOLAN" c.d.s and circular "POST FREE / P.C / PRISONERS OF WAR", endorsed "Passed Censor, A. Wilson Lt. Col."; and a stampless 1916 cover from Germany to A. Fritz at Ahmednagar but sent on to Dagshai, the reverse with violet oval "STATION STAFF OFFICE / Dy. No. - / Date - / DAGSHAI". 1055 Katapahar. 1915 (May 2) Stampless "I am well" type postcard, Army Form 2042 (the reverse as Burrows type 2.5 but without any printing on the front), sent by Joseph Rosenfeld, a P.O.W at Katapahar, to Australia franked ½a pair cancelled at Bombay, with a violet Bombay censor cachet. Minor corner creases, otherwise fine and rare. Very little mail recorded from this tiny camp and an exceptional use of an army card, unrecorded by Burrows.

1071 image1853 (May 7) Stampless cover to "His Serene Highness The Landgrave Charles Augustus of Hesse, Augustenau, Electoral-Hesse, Germany", initialled "FWH", with enclosed letter written by Prince Frederick William Hesse from "Cleopatra, Moulmein". Red boxed "INDIA PAID" on both sides, backstamped "CALCUTTA / G.P.O / SHIP LETTER" and at Trieste, Frankfurt and Eisenach, various rates. Prince Frederick Hesse was third in line to the Danish throne and became Elector of Hesse in 1875; in 1849 he joined H.M.S "Cleopatra" to train as a midshipman, sailing to India, Burma, and the Far East (see lots 954, 955).
