VERY FINE PAIR OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE PLATE PROOF WITH BRUSH STROKES.

In 1854 complete sheets of 200 3c India proofs from Plate 4 were sent by Toppan Carpenter to Bemrose and Perkins Bacon in England for a perforating experiment. Each firm received left and right panes. All of the proofs were cancelled with brush strokes to prevent use as postage.

3c Orange Red, Ty. II, Horizontal Roulettes (11A var). Two horizontal pairs originally forming a block of four, Positions 31-32R2L and 41-42R2L, top pair original gum, h.r., clear roulettes at top and bottom of each, "cancelled" by intersecting ruled lines, top pair with small thin spots, bottom pair with small spot from the cancelling ink

FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE RECONSTRUCTED BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH ROULETTE TRIAL PERFORATIONS.

The Toppan, Carpenter & Co. trial perforations are discussed by Dr. Chase in his 3c book (pp. 174-175, the top pair in this reconstructed block pictured). The stamps in this block are rouletted approximately 7-1/2 in the horizontal direction and lack the 16 x 15-1/2 perforations seen in the following lot. Dr. Chase states that all these experiments used stamps from a late 1855 printing of Plate 2L.

FINE AND RARE PAIR OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE WITH BOTH ROULETTE AND PERF 16 x 15-1/2 TRIAL PERFORATIONS.

The Toppan, Carpenter & Co. trial perforations are discussed by Dr. Chase in his 3c book (pp. 174-175). This fascinating pair is rouletted approximately 7-1/2 horizontally at top and bottom. It is also perforated 16 horizontally in a single row near the bottom and perforated 15-1/2 vertically, both between the stamps and at right and left. Dr. Chase states that all these experiments used stamps from a late 1855 printing of Plate 2L.

3c Dull Red, Ty. I, Chicago Perf 12-1/2 (11 var). Fully formed perfs all around, Chicago Ill. circular datestamp cancel, few short perfs at left and single pulled perf at top, Fine appearance, an attractive example of the scarce Chicago Perforation, the origin of this experiment was revealed in an article published by Jerome S. Wagshal in Chronicle 130 (May 1986), the inventor of the machine used to create the Chicago Perf stamps was Dr. Elijah W. Hadley, a Chicago dentist, he probably constructed the machine in 1854, over a two-year period, beginning in November 1854, Dr. Hadley's device was offered for sale to the Post Office Department thru R. K. Swift, a prominent Chicago banker and businessman, the distinctive 12-1/2 gauge Chicago Perf was applied to sheets of the 1c and 3c 1851 Issue, Scott Retail $5,000.00 (Image)

Plate 1L, Clear roulettes with portion of adjoining stamp at right, Waterbury circular datestamp cancel, Fine and rare, only about ten off-cover examples are recorded with the Waterbury Roulette, in an article on this issue in the Sesquicentennial book (pp. 144-148), Wilson Hulme dates the device to 1854, based on shade and plate, all are from Plate 1 Late, the roulette is spread far apart, leaving wide areas of the stamp still connected (Image)

Horizontal pair, Positions 49-50L2L, long sawtooth perforations at bottom and straight edge other sides including huge interpane margin at right with centerline, "Washington D.C. Dec. 11" circular datestamp, tiny tear at top left, Very Fine appearance, very little is known about this private perforation, it was originally part of a horizontal strip of four, illustrated in Chronicle (May 1975, p. 80), ex Alexander and "Lake Shore", 2002 P.F. certificate declining opinion no longer accompanies (Image)
