Metropolitan Fair, New York N.Y., 10c Black
(WV10). Position 2, unused (no gum), large margins to clear at bottom right, crisp impression VERY FINE. THE UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT BLACK METROPOLITAN FAIR STAMP. The Metropolitan Fair was held in New York City from April 4 to
April 27, 1864. Stamps were printed for use at the fair post office (Scott WV8-WV10), but none of these appear to have been issued during the fair; the two leading theories explaining why the Metropolitan Fair stamps were never used are that 1) the
stamps were not prepared in time for release at the fair, or 2) the use of the word "Bazaar" on the stamp was rejected by officials as understating the significance of the event. Ex Steele, Kantor (illustrated in their book on p. 110) and Lyons.
