EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT TYPE Ia IMPERFORATE IN EXISTENCE. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY AND ONE OF THE RAREST STAMPS OF 20TH CENTURY UNITED STATES PHILATELY.
Scott 482A, like its slightly more famous predecessor, Scott 314A, was issued imperforate by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and sold to the Schermack Company for use in its patented stamp-affixing machines. The Schermack "Sealer and Stamper" machine typically applied stamps one at a time, and, in most cases, the hyphen-hole perfs on one side would be cut off. Unlike Scott 314A, the release of imperforate sheets printed from the experimental Type Ia plates escaped the notice of contemporary collectors, and, therefore, has a very small survival rate.
Our census of Scott 482A, available at our website at https://siegelauctions.com/census/US/Scott/482A , records one pair (ex Zoellner), four covers, one unused single (perfs trimmed on both sides), a used pair and 40 used singles for a total of 47 stamps.
Schermack Type III stamps are often cut into the design by the oblong perforations or miscut with one side of the perforated margin missing. This problem for collectors, which meant very little to contemporary users of the stamps, resulted from two consecutive events. First, the sheets were perforated with the Schermack holes, creating an opportunity for misalignment between the stamps. Second, when the strip of stamps was fed through the Schermack affixing machine, the cutting blade did not always align with the space between stamps. The stamp offered here is remarkable because the Schermack perforations just touch the design, and it was cut with margins well clear of the design and with Schermack perforations intact.
Census No. 482A-CAN-20. Ex Twigg-Smith, "Scarsdale" and "Hanover". 1989 and 2001 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. With 2009 and 2017 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $135,000.00). This is the only Scott 482A at the 90 grade, with only one higher (at 90J) (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE OF SCOTT 502 GRADED GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE POSSIBLE ON THE GRADING CHART. THE ESSENCE OF PERFECTION.
Ex "Scarsdale", "Westchester" and "Golden State". With 1997 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in this grade in SMQ, SMQ $1,900.00 as 100). The highest grade possible and the only to achieve it. This stamp has attracted strong interest every time it has been sold -- $4,500 hammer in the 2007 "Scarsdale" sale, $5,250 hammer in the "Westchester" sale and $6,250 hammer in the recent "Golden State" sale. Moving down the scale, one is graded 100 (we have never offered it) and only four are graded 98 -- low Population Report numbers. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A PERFECT POST-OFFICE FRESH MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF SCOTT 506, GRADE GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE POSSIBLE AND THE ONLY TO ACHIEVE IT.
Ex "Golden State". With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 100, SMQ $1,350.00 as 100). This is the highest grade possible and the only stamp to achieve it. (Image)

EXTYREMELY FINE GEM. A PHENOMENAL MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 9-CENT PERF 11 1917 ISSUE, SCOTT 509, GRADED SUPERB 98 JUMBO BY P.S.E.
Ex "Southern Cross", Dr. Morris, Dr. Killien, "Westchester" and "Golden State". With 1993 P.F. and 2006 P.S.E. certificates (Superb 98 Jumbo; SMQ $850.00). In our opinion the SMQ value is far too low. Only one has graded higher (at 100, the margins are noticeably smaller than the stamp offered here but it must measure closer to perfect) and two others share this grade. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 2-CENT TYPE VII IMPERFORATE, GRADED GEM 100 BY P.S.E. -- THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED AND THE ONLY ONE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.
Most Type VII stamps were used by private vending and affixing-machine companies. However, unlike Scott 314A and 482A, a small supply of the imperforate 2c Type VII stamps did reach the public.
P.S.E. Encapsulated (Gem 100; SMQ $7,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded and the only one to achieve it. Multiples are extremely rare, so it is virtually impossible to "create" mutant 100 Jumbos by sacrificing surrounding stamps (Image)

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL LIGHTLY CANCELLED USED PAIR OF THE 2-CENT TYPE VII IMPERFORATE OFFSET ISSUE.

With 1967 P.F. and 2018 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $3,400.00) (Image)
VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN MULTIPLES OF THE ONE-CENT GREEN 1917 ISSUE PERF 10 AT TOP OR BOTTOM, SHOWING TRANSITIONAL PERFORATIONS AND WITH PLATE NUMBER AT TOP. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT 20TH CENTURY PERFORATION RARITIES.
At a certain point during production one of the perforating wheels became defective. In the course of repairs part of one perforation wheel was inadvertently changed from Perf 11 to Perf 10. Based on the physical evidence of surviving copies, this was the nineteenth row of pins on the wheel. Many examples of the Perf 10 on One Side rarities show transitional perfs where the out-of-gauge perforation pins crossed the span of more than one stamp.
Our census of this rarity contains 12 unused (including two in a block of four, four in a block of 25 and and two in this plate block of six) and seven used examples (two are part of a block).
Census No. 498g-OG-BL-02. With 2003 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as one hinged and one Mint N.H. example of the variety without premium for the plate block (Image)
