VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE MIXED-FRANKING COVER FROM CUBA TO BUENOS AIRES VIA ST. THOMAS AND RIO DE JANEIRO. ALTHOUGH THIS COVER NEVER TOUCHED UNITED STATES SOIL, IT REQUIRED 10-CENT POSTAGE FOR TRANSPORT ON A UNITED STATES AND BRAZIL MAIL STEAMSHIP COMPANY VESSEL FROM ST. THOMAS TO RIO DE JANEIRO. A FASCINATING USE OF THE BANK NOTE ISSUE.
A few covers sent from Cuba to correspondents in Buenos Aires show the unusual routing via St. Thomas and Rio de Janeiro. The senders evidently arranged for letters to be carried on a Spanish packet outside the mails from Havana to St. Thomas, which explains the absence of Cuban postmarks. This letter entered the mails through the St. Thomas post office. Danish West Indies postage was paid in cash, and the U.S. and Great Britain stamps were left uncancelled. The only way for mail to reach Rio de Janeiro from St. Thomas was on a regular U.S. & Brazil Mail Steamship Co. sailing, which required 10c U.S. postage (in this case, paid by the stamp affixed in Matanzas). On arrival at Rio, the letter was handed over to the British Post Office, which applied the "C83" cancel and sent it by a Pacific Steam Navigation Co. vessel to Buenos Aires.
With 2002 P.F. certificate mentioning only a "sealed tear" on 4p stamp (Image)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE MIXED FRANKING -- MIXED COUNTRIES AND MIXED ISSUES -- PAYING POSTAGE FROM CUBA TO THE UNITED STATES AND BEYOND TO SPAIN. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE NEW YORK FOREIGN MAIL GEOMETRIC CANCELS.
There are ten recorded mixed franking covers sent from Cuba to Spain. This cover is one of the most attractive of the Quadrado correspondence, because it has a large number of stamps, all of which are tied on the front, including by NYFM cancels.

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE MIXED-COUNTRY FRANKING ON COVER FROM CUBA TO SPAIN VIA THE UNITED STATES.
This is a very attractive example from the Quadrado correspondence, with all stamps tied on the front (the U.S. stamps tied by New York Foreign Mail cancels) and condition which is superior to many of the fragile covers from this group.

VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR MIXED-COUNTRY FRANKING FROM CUBA TO FRANCE, VIA THE UNITED STATES.
The 10c Bank Note paid only the incoming steamship rate from Cuba, with the Cuban stamp paying local postage. The unpaid U.S.-France treaty rate postage was due from the recipient.

VERY FINE. A RARE CUBA-UNITED STATES COMBINATION FRANKING ON AN INCOMING STEAMSHIP COVER TO BOSTON. PARTICULARLY DESIRABLE WITH BOTH COUNTRIES' STAMPS PAYING REGULAR POSTAGE INSTEAD OF FORWARDING OR POSTAGE DUE.
The sender in Cuba apparently had a supply of 10c U.S. stamps and used one when posting this cover in Matanzas. The New York exchange office cancelled the stamp and forwarded it on to Boston.

VERY FINE COVER AND LETTER. THIS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN COVERS BEARING A PAIR OF THE RARE 5-CENT 1898 COAMO PROVISIONAL. IT IS ALSO ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN FRANKINGS TO SAN FRANCISCO.
The first knowledge in the philatelic world of the existence of the Coamo provisional stamps was most likely provided by Captain R. D. Potts's use of the stamps on mail to his wife in San Francisco, rather than Alfred O. Tittmann's purchase of the remainder sheets, which became known later. Shortly after Potts mailed his letters an article about the Coamo Provisional appeared in Mekeel's Weekly Stamp News. The cover offered here is the first of three sent by Potts to his wife and may have been the source of the Mekeels article. One other Potts cover also bears a pair and these two are the only Coamo covers recorded with pairs. While the stamps were not valid on mail sent outside of Puerto Rico, Potts was a collector and recognized the philatelic significance of using the Coamo Provisional on his mail. Ten Coamo covers are known in total, including the three which were sent by Captain Potts. Our census is available at https://siegelauctions.com/census/puertorico/scott/201
The accompanying letter from Capt. Potts to the New England Stamp Co. is dated January 28, 1900. It describes how he came into possession of provisional stamps while serving in the U.S. force that captured Coamo, and states that he sent three covers to his wife, using a total of five stamps. This exactly matches the known population of Potts covers and stamps used on them.
Census No. 201-COV-05. Ex Junghanns. Listed in Scott as pair on cover but unpriced. Scott Retail as single on cover $27,500.00 (Image)
