VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED IMPRINT EXAMPLES OF THIS 1861 ISSUE SHIELD ESSAY PRINTED BY NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY.

This essay depicts the 3c 1861 Issue frame design surrounding a shield with a central "3". The inside designs progressively diminish from left to right on all examples, but they are far more visible on the engraved examples. In addition, there is extra lathework around the shield on the right two essays. This lathework is not visible on any of the typographed examples we have encountered. This is one of two examples recorded with the bottom imprints. The other is printed in Brown.

Ex "Lake Shore". Unlisted in Scott with the imprint or in this color. Scott Retail as normal (Image)

Original gum, h.r., embossed design cut to shape with central "2" die cut, Very Fine and most unusual, this matches the design listed in Scott as 79-E27 but does not match any of the specific listings, Scott Catalogue hints that it may have been produced for an envelope design, but the fact that it is gummed calls that into question, Scott Retail as 79-E27d (Image)
