2 E ImageToppan, Carpenter & Co, 1861 Issue Die Essays, Cut to Shape (63-E9a/72-E5b). Eight essays representing each of the 1861 Toppan, Carpenter & Co. complete design submissions, including Nos. 63-E9a (Black and Blue), 65-E4c, 67-E4b, 69-E4c, 70-E4b and 72-E5a (Black and Blue), each showing full designs all around, rich colors, a few small paper translucencies and flaws as usual for these

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE SET OF THE 1861 TOPPAN, CARPENTER & COMPANY FULL DESIGN ESSAYS. VERY RARELY OFFERED AS A SET.

The wide availability of the 1903 reprints produced by Ernest Schernikow sometimes lures collectors into the sense that these original 1861 Toppan, Carpenter essays are common. A footnote in Scott states "examples on 1861 paper and in 1861 colors are rare." This set represents the full group of complete designs submitted for the 1861 contract (Toppan, Carpenter did not produce a 10c or 30c design for the contract) (Image)
