CHINA, 1898 Japanese Post Office in Shanghai to United States. Cover with originating "Kiukiang 8 Sep. 98" large dollar chop at top left, entering the Japanese mails with 1883 5s Ultramarine (74) and tied by "Shanghai, I.J.P.O., 14 Sep. 98" circular datestamp, addressed to Louisville Ky., various postage due markings including "U.S. Charge to Collect 5 Cents" handstamp where U.S. 1895 5c Deep Claret (J41) was affixed (precancelled) and dated Oct. 18, Shanghai large dollar chop, Yokohama and Louisville backstamps, cover with rough edge wear and Japanese stamp with trivial faults, Fine, on Oct. 1, 1898, while this cover was in transit, the Japanese Post Office rate to the United States went from 5 sen to 10 sen and is why postage due was collected, a similar cover was sold in our April 2017 Sale (Sale 1152, Lot 1061) with Chinese stamps for $72,500.00 plus buyer's premium (Image)
