Two, tied by red quartered cork cancels, matching "New York Paid All May 23" (1868) circular datestamp with mostly clear strike of red "Supplementary Mail" Type A handstamp on blue folded letter to Liverpool, England, sender's directive "per Steamer City of Paris" and carried on that Inman Line steamer from New York on May 23, Liverpool arrival datestamp of Jun. 2, left stamp creased from file fold, still Very Fine and attractive cover, the stamps paid the 12c treaty rate plus equivalent fee for Supplementary Mail service, with 1985 P.F. certificate (Image)

Tied by red quartered cork cancel with light strike of matching "New York Paid All" circular datestamp and clear "Supplementary Mail" Type A handstamp on 1868 folded letter to Liverpool, England, sender's directive "per City of Antwerp" and carried on that Inman Line steamer from New York on Apr. 11, arriving Liverpool Apr. 21, red London transit datestamp, reduced at right where additional 12c stamp almost certainly was located, otherwise Very Fine and scarce Supplementary Mail use of the 12c E Grill from the Rathbone correspondence, with 2004 P.F. certificate which did not detect the missing stamp, stating "genuine usage" (Image)

12c Black (69). Two horizontal pairs, used with 24c Lilac (78), tied by circle of wedges cancels, faint strike of red New York Paid circular datestamp crossed out with blue crayon, "New York Am. Pkt. Jun. 10" circular datestamp on cover to Belfast, Ireland, the cover weighed between one and two ounces and so struck with "Short Paid" in oval and "84" (cents) due handstamp, manuscript "4/-" shillings due on arrival, some slight wear, small scuffed spot at lower left where writing erased, Fine, the sender attempted to pay the non-existent triple rate, however rate progressions at this time went from double to quadruple, the entire franking was disregarded and the full (quadruple) amount was due from the addressee (Image)

FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST DOCUMENTED USE OF THE 1868 12-CENT Z GRILL.

According to our research as published in the Zoellner catalogue and available at our website at http://siegelauctions.com/enc/zgrill.htm, the 12c Z Grill probably went into production during the first few days of February 1868. By March, the F Grill replaced the Z Grill on the grilling machine.
