III (26) and horizontal pair of 10c Green, Ty. II (32), tied by "New Orleans La. Nov. 22, 1858" circular datestamps on orange cover to Genoa, Italy, sender's directive "Via London" and with "GB/40c" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, also with manuscript "2" indicating double weight, large manuscript "16" for 1.6 lira due, London, Paris and arrival backstamps, 3c strip placed over edge of cover and also scissors-separated affecting perfs, 1c piece out at upper right, still Very Fine, a colorful and very unusual use, franked to pay the 38c rate via Prussian Closed Mail, this must have missed the sailing of the HAPAG's Borussia on Dec. 1 and was instead placed aboard the Inman Line's City of Baltimore and sent via Open Mail, the stamps ended up only paying the 21c rate via American Packet with the remainder due from recipient, with 2006 P.F. certificate (Image)

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE STRIP OF THREE OF THE 1861 5-CENT TYPE II ORANGE BROWN ON COVER. A STRIP OF THREE IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF THE 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN USED ON COVER. FOUR STRIPS ON COVERS ARE RECORDED, INCLUDING TWO IN HORIZONTAL FORMAT. A GREAT CLASSIC PERIOD RARITY.

The last published update of the census of 5c Orange Brown covers by Dr. Richard M. Searing showed a total of 38 covers, including four strips of three (two vertical, two horizontal).
