2100 c ImageMarseilles, France, to New York, 1785, "PAQ.L'ORIENT." Incredibly bold strike of straightline handstamp, faint strike of "P.P.P.P." (upside down at top) and "P.PAYE" handstamps on folded letter datelined "Marseille 1st Augst. 1785" and addressed to New York, carried on the fourth voyage of the French Royal Ship Agency's Courier de New York, departing from L'Orient on September 30, and arriving in New York on November 13, 1785 (45 days), manuscript "40" sols prepaid rate marking on back, manuscript "2d" due, Very Fine, a magnificent strike of the "PAQ.L'ORIENT" straightline during the Premiere Regie, initially no U.S. postage was due on French Royal Packet mail when the destination was the port of arrival, sometime between Nov. 1784 and Nov. 1785, the post office began assessing 2 pence due on mail addressed to New York, ex Martin (Image)

Mostly readable straightline handstamp on folded cover from New York to Paris, France, red "NEW-YORCK/PAR LE HAVRE" two-line entry handstamp and manuscript "27" sols due in Paris, red manuscript "20" sols on back for packet postage, Fine, an extremely rare example of the "PAQ.NEW/YORK" straightline on a French Royal Packet cover during the Seconde Regie, only five examples of this marking on eastbound mail are recorded during this period, Seconde Regie period ships departed and arrived through Le Havre, ex Martin (Image)

Straightline handstamp on back of folded letter datelined "New York 16 February 1793" and addressed to Havre de Grace, France, red "Amerique Septentrionale P. L'Orient" double-circle entry handstamp, manuscript "1" crossed out and re-rated "30" sols, Very Fine use from the Troisieme Regie, in 1732-93, the Regie's agent re-used the "P.F. DE NEW YORK" marking that had been employed earlier, they are known in black ink during this period and examples of such mail are very rare, this cover was probably carried on one of the DuBois packets under contract with the French government, the Le Suffren departed New York on March 15, 1793, and arrived in L'Orient on May 15, ex Martin (Image)
