2075 c Image12c Black, E. Grill (90). Clear grill, used with 6c Carmine, H. Grill (137), s.e. at right and with discernible grill on forehead, tied by circle of wedges cancel, "Clinton N.Y. Oct. 2" circular datestamp on 1870 cover to Athens, Greece, red "New York Paid All Oct. 4" transit datestamp, red "P.D." handstamp, Trieste and receiving backstamps, some edgewear, Very Fine, scarce franking to pay the 18c rate to Greece via North German Union Closed Mail, in July 1870 the NGU Direct Mail rate was reduced to 15c with a corresponding reduction of the 23c NGU Closed Mail rate to 18c, the recipient was a Professor of Classics and Greek Literature at Hamilton College for more than 50 years, ex Vogel (Image)

Grill (94), tied to each other by cork cancels on small Dec. 24, 1868 cover to Rome, Italy and forwarded to Beirut, Syria, sent by North German Union Closed Mail through England, upon arrival in Rome the cover was re-addressed and forwarded by French Mail to Syria, a dizzying array of markings and backstamps trace its journey through the three postal systems, including New York, Cologne, Verona, Rome, Naples and Beirut, as well as handstamped and manuscript ratings which were crossed out as the cover moved along its journey, some edgewear as expected, 3c with blunted perfs from placement near edge of cover, Fine appearing and most unusual use (Image)

(weiterfranco 2 silbergroschen) handstamp for postage beyond German frontier, backstamped with rare North German Post Agent "Norddeutchpost" circular datestamp of Jun. 26 (struck in Constantinople), stamp with small flaws including tiny internal tears and corner crease, small opening tear at top of cover, Fine appearing and rare use of the 12c F Grill on cover to Turkey, paying the 12c rate by North German Union Direct Mail (Image)
